Some pics of the badges restoration process
As you can see the Hispano Aleman badge is heavily inspired by the Porsche badge. Being Ben Heiderich the Spanish Porsche importer that makes sense. He was German hence the German flag, studied in Canada hence the Canadian leafs, and lived in Madrid for many years (hence the bear which is part of the Madrid's coat of arms). And obviously the Spanish flag!

Are you going to put a Manx 2 badge on it or Hispano Aleman?

Hispano Aleman
I contacted the Meyers Manx registry as you suggested, and sent them some pics, including the lifting blocks. To my surprise they told me it was not an original Manx
I was planning in any case to use the Hispano Aleman badge, as being a Spanish VW fan, having a Hispano is a very special thing. And having the personal car of the factory owner is just a dream! _________________ 50 11A

Did you include a photo and mention what appears to be the four small holes on the back side of the panel just above the rear lifting block?

Installing back all the Porsche (912?, 914?) gauges and a period correct Blaupunkt radio
For the time being and while I restore the original steering wheel I have installed a Grant steering wheel which also looks pretty nice on the car

Front seats back in the car...
According to the experts these are authentic Recaro 911R seats which makes perfect sense given the builder and first owner of the car
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=709029
After a lot of deliberation I decided to leave them in the car to respect as much as possible the original look Ben Heiderich intended for his car when he built it in 1970, even thought the seats might cost as much as the car itself
I only added some harnesses as the car did not come with any sort of seatbelts when I bought it

Our Buggy came with lap belts only. I have left them in place and do use them. Without a proper roll bar or roll cage I question whether or not it is a good thing to be held place as it would guarantee one's demise in a roll over. Without a belt there is a slim chance of being thrown clear. All other collisions of course belts are an advantage.
Also without a proper anchor point for shoulder belts you are dependent on how well the seat is attached to the pan so not sure how that would work out in real life. The VW pans were never intended to take that kind of a stress load. I too am loath to clutter up the original vintage look of the Buggy with a cage so I drive carefully, avoid rush hour traffic and high speed crazy jam packed holiday weekend freeways. |

And these are the pictures of the more or less finished car. Still a few details to sort out, but the car is pretty much ready
Have already driven some 600-700km with it and it is really fun to drive. I was actually expecting more performance out of the Porsche engine, but I can imagine the massive rear tyres with their 85 centimeters height do not help in this regard
And the most important thing: my kids love it!! Actually they push me very hard to bring them to school in it as often as possible

That is beautiful! Nice job, I am very partial to period correct Buggies. They remind me of a special time in history before good clean fun was regulated and litigated out of existence.

Good to hear it's not a Curb Queen, drive and enjoy. Now you know the lead was not put on the front to keep the front wheels on the ground! It would be a snappier ride without it but may not handle as well in the corners. As always it's a compromise.

That's the best part! I live for those grins in our Buggy! I find them on everyone's face right from my wife's down through the grandchildren and even on people that see us go by!! Just wait until they are old enough to drive it!

ha ha yes now it is 200% clear the lead block was not installed to prevent the car from taking off. But I am certain it helps a lot with the handling _________________ 50 11A

Very nice project and result. I bet it is tons of fun! The tach is most likely from a 1970-'73 914. The red line is the key. 912 would be 6000. A 911 would be a min. of 6200. The 914 was 5600. The combo gauge is a 911 gauge. The speedometer is pre '74 Porsche. The two small gauges are not early Porsche. |

Thanks a lot for the feedback in identifying the gauges. So the original builder in 1970 took a bit of everything in the Porsche range
And yes, it is indeed tons of fun to drive!! _________________ 50 11A

Gentlemen, hope you are all fine and healthy these days...
Has been close to a year since we completed the resto of the Hispano Aleman buggy. So far we have enjoyed it big time with close to 2,000km being clocked since then.
Mechanically the car drives and brakes nicely. Only mechanical issue I have experienced (and which is increasing over time) is backfiring issues at iddle, in particular when the engine is hot (after some hardcore driving). When getting into a subway parking lot the magnitude of the backfire is really scary
What are your thoughts?
Many thanks! _________________ 50 11A

I had a similar issue in my 72 bus. Turned out to be the points wearing. Fixed the gap and I was good to go! _________________ '68 manx M2285. Registry 313

Interesting one this as the buggy pictured in the magazine article is a British GP Beachbuggy or an exact copy of one.
