I recently bought a 73 VW bug with a claimed Porsche engine swap. Now... this motor needs a little bit of work to run right. No big deal, so the first thing I need to do is determine exactly which motor this is. It appears to be a motor from a 914, the 1.7, 1.8 or the 2.0. The casting numbers on this is GE048023. I could not find an ID for this thing aaanyyyyywheeereeee! That is until I got a hint that it may be a type 2 2.0... that is all the info I could find out. Is it a type 4 or is this dang thing a Porsche? I would like to rebuild it but first I need to know what I’m looking at. Thank you anyone in advance!

A "GE" engine is a 2.0l Type 4 engine. Not a 914, but honestly there's not much of a difference.

What would be the biggest difference of which there is? What kind of power do they make? I know the Porsche 2.0 was said to make around 96hp... I might be wrong on that number but not far off. |

| the ge was a 2.0 914 bottom end with a 1.8 top end. No where near the horsepower of the original 914 2.0 but plenty for a bug! |

How would that be a combination for less power? Wouldn’t the 1.8 have smaller combustion chambers which would end up having higher compression on a 2.0 bottom end??? |

| the 2.0 has a combustion chamber designed by Porsche and larger valves. THAT combination along with the longer 71mm stroke and modified fuel injection system gave the engine more power than the 1.7 1.8 or bus. The 912E with the 914 2.0 engine and L jetronic fuel injection actually had over 100 hp! |

Plus the GE pistons were with a 15cc dish to lower the CR to 7.3 to 1 vs the 914 2.0L 7.6 to 1. The heads are what make the hp as the GE bus heads had little valves and typical spark plus location. The 914 2.0L heads had the 42x36 valves and different spark plug location to help make hp. Your setup is in the 67 hp range with hydraulic lifters.
