I am in the process of rattle-can painting my 64 steel rims. The tires have been removed.

Is it a problem if a lot of over spray gets on the centers ? I mean the part the tire covers up . In trying to get the lip edge painted some gets on the inside.

I was thinking I would sand this area smooth when finished just to make sure the tires seal when I put them back on.

It will not be a problem.

You want a light coat of paint all through the bead, but not a thick coat that could chip off and let air leak by. Paint the inner part of the wheel for sure, it rusts just as much as the outside.

When I paint rims, I get a nice coat on the inside where the tire seats. You want clean, smooth and painted against the tire.

Any update, OP? Did you paint the inside of your wheels? Did you apply primer? I'm planning to paint my steel wheels also once I'm done installing the atv parts that I bought for my other rig.
