I hope I am in the right section
I am building an off road buggy that will have app. 150-195HP. I need to build a drive shaft that can handle that hp and 20* of angle. the diff. is solid mount so the shaft does not articulate. I thought about the 181"s but at that angle it will be almost the max for 181"s. Should I go with the 930"s instead. I am trying to keep the rotating mass and weight as low as possible without breakage. the saft is right next to the oil pan maybe 1/2 inch, I will be putting in a guard to help protect it. The shaft will be about 20 1/2 " long.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Jim |

I've seen that page before but it doesn't answer my question will the 181 work ok with 20* of travel already set in with the travel of the 181 at 22* max. The 930 has 28*, with that much more travel does it justify going with that much more weight and mass.. It is fixed position no articulation would the 181 work ok at 20* or would it have a tendency to break? |

Jim, at your power level you should deffinately go with 930 CV's. There is more to it than just the angle, also make sure you race prep them. Hope to see some pics of your machine.
Good Luck

I have drag raced my 170 HP Ghia with VW Thing (Type IV) CV's and axles without breaking them, so I'd say they can handle the HP. In your situation maxing out the angle limits of the Thing CV's I would suggest getting 930's and you won't have to ever worry about it again. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Thanks to both of you that was the advice I was looking for. I sent one of the 930's to a guy to test for impact tseting of inertia and weight effect on moving objects. I won't get any info back for at least a month, he's doing it for free. I can't wait that long but I figured I would have to go with the 930 anyway. Pushing the 181 that far would not be a good idea but I wanted to find out from some that had experience with this before I made a choice, again thanks for the head's up.

Any joint will hold up to more abuse at the least amount of deflection. It’s when you try running it at an extreme angle is when you need a joint larger than normal for the application. Lots of off-road woods buggy guys I knew had to go with the 181 joint over a similar size Type 2 joint since they were running the suspension with the torsion bars heavily preloaded. This was with fairly small 1641’s/1915’s using 002 “3-rib/5rib” Bus transaxles. I’d go with the 930’s in your case. |

I agree with everyone's opinion. I will be going with the 930's and prepping them. I will post a couple of pics so you can see what I was trying to explain as soon as I can figure out how. |
