Judging by the placement of the 4 rear bolts and reinforcing plate, he may have retained the original Westfalia hinges and popup feature?
Or, possibly, the entire assembly can be detached from the van and tossed into Puget Sound for use as a row boat ... _________________ Camp Westfalia

As much as I wanted to get out and inspect it I didn't. The reinforcing plate is curious because it doesn't look like it can lift up at the black band above the B-pillar unless if the cap over the luggage rack comes off or hinges. I haven't seen this van before but I hope it stays in the neighborhood.
I think all interesting vans should have a QR code on them so us stalkers can look 'em up to see what's going on with them. _________________ - Jim

Probably poptop hinges.
Standing up inside,,, maybe you hinge the luggage fairing forward before popping the top? _________________

I think this is one of 3dig's pop ups. He owns Mt Baker Metal and is making aluminum bits for vans.

Interesting front solar panel mount with what looks like storage below. (That will crush mpgs though.) I did a study going to Florida three successive times and something that tall in the roof rack reduced my highway mpgs by 2mpg.
I would imagine it wouldn't effect mpg much more than that roof rack. |
Hey thats my van! I finally got spotted. We were just leaving for Arizona. you are right about the 2 mpg that was my guess too. but what you see is rather stripped down , no fire wood ,bikes ,kayaks or other junk . I figure the box which was made by a former owner is a better than nothing wind break for all the junk whick winds up on my roof. I added the solar panel just before this trip in the place of the old wood top ,seems to work ok down here in the desert (keeps up up with the frig) Anyhow for what it costs to keep the old bus going , gas is the least expensive thing in my long road trips. The top sides are a ongoing project. Honestly sometimes I feel like the vehicle in the ikea comercial. Happy trails Tim&Pam

Hopefully they have AAA. Most ferries in WA are part of the state road system so it’s just like any other road. At least that’s how I think it works. theadventureneverends probably as more accurate info...
From AAA WA state...
Tolls and Ferries
Ferry, toll-bridge or toll-road charges for the member’s vehicle are the responsibility of the member. Fees of this nature for the service vehicle and service vehicle driver are covered by AAA. _________________ - Jim

Pop-top, high-top Syncro seen in Astoria, OR. Based on the forward fuel fill port and the rear side markers it appears to be a Syncro conversion.
Is this a Westfalia top with a built-in high-top? I think I've seen a photo or mention of such a top here.
