PostPosted: Sun Jul 17, 2005 7:24 pm    Post subject: Late model ghia side mirrors Reply with quote

I purchased some ghia mirrors about 3 years ago as I was beginning my project. Well now the car is wired the body work completed and I'm intalling the good stuff.

The mirrors I purchased don't seem correct. When mounted the horizontal arm from the mounting plate to the arm is not horizontal but rather on a superior angle where it connects to the mirror. This leaves the mirror at a wierd angle in that the top of the mirror is not on a horizontal plane. the outer margin of the mirror is tilted upward and the margin near the door is downward. It seems like the mirror should be able to rotate on the arm to level the mirror. Yes the mounting bases are installed correctly, wider edge superior and narrow edge inferiorly.

This looks hidious and yes they are from the junk place, EMPI however I though I was dealing with a reputable outfit. I tied to contact the company but their phone number is not the same and there is no listing for them through information in Arkansas.

Does anyone have a pic of the original mirror mounted on a late model ghia so that I can see what the mirrors are meant to be? Thanks

Check out the gallery for some close up shots. Try Ghiaddict's site. Just look for his profile and click on the www to go to his web site. You can try Jason Hamilton's site as well, http://www.type-14.com

Take the mirrors off the doors and rotate the bases (see picture below). Even though they look the same, the bases have a top and a botton, and if you have them mounted on the door wrong it results in the weird angle you talk about:

Yes, I kinow there is a top (superior) and bottom (iinferior) for the bases. The thicker portion goes to the top and the thinner portion to the bottom, yet there is a strange angle.

Are you sure you have Ghia mirrors? If the bases are rotated properly then all I can think of is maybe you have beetle or T3 mirrors?

Check out the picture of my '74 Ghia in my gallery. I've also questioned the angle of my mirrors but they seem to do the job. Maybe mine are mounted incorrectly. Someone will let me know, I'm sure.

Yeah, I'll be polite and say they are *unusual* looking, but that's not the way they should be. I think you have beetle mirrors (or beetle mounting bases).

See, the beetle door is almost flat and vertical, so the base is made to give the mirror some upward angle. The ghia door is already angled, so the base is flatter. Put a beetle base on a ghia door and you have 2X the upward angle you should have. And that sure looks like what you have going on.

Mine aren't that bad. looks like you have the bases upside down or beetel mirrors. What brand mirrors are those? I'm thinking about ordering some repo's from KGPR just to compare.

Anyone purched their mirrors or bases from them?

I carry an OEM mirror for the 68 up ghias, and right from the box you can tell there is something different about them. The look like if you were to mount them they would droop, but in fact they will sit horizontal after mounting.

I have a bug mirror on my '67 and it has the unmistakable upward angle you are referring to. Not a big angle, just enough so that it looks funny.

This is how the passenger side mirror should look like:

No, that is the original owner I bought the car off of when it was in this condition:

Bones, if Coad's suggestion of flipping the escutcheon doesn't solve the problem, it's most likely that you have the incorrect mirrors. First pic below are Ghia mirrors left and right. The pic farther down is a Beetle mirror (left) '68 and later for comparison.

Thanks Airheadparts. Just as I thought - I was sold the wrong mirrors. Mine are like the one in the bottom picture. Do you sell parts or are these your own mirrors?
