Been driving a good bit over the past few weeks. Gotta get the driving in before the cold and the salt come!

/ Today being 2nd Saturday of month means we, the VW guys in this local area all get together to chew the fat. Today’s project was my car which received some love. Main complaint was loose steering and this just after I installed a rebuilt steering box, upper and lower ball joints and tie rods and a coupler.

Turned out the pinch bolt which secures steering shaft to coupler which is also new. The original bolt has a castellated nut and cotter pin and I ended up using some shitty non VW bolt with a self locking nut, it has worked loose somehow. I’ll be going back with grade 8 bolt and will double nut with loctite.

While it was up on the rack I did a walk around inspection and adjusted brakes.

I also addressed a lingering issue from when I first built the car about 5 or 6 years ago. When I got it someone had installed solid mounts for transaxle which is worse than useless on a stock bug. I installed new mounts and discover one of the big bolts had been cross threaded. I screwed up and left off the brace for frame horns and have been driving this way since then. We located a piece and fitted that today.

After the work was done I’m off for a test drive, fantastic no more steering issue and as usual I achieved warp factor 5, aye aye capt.

Happy motoring. Very Happy

Proper drive can cancelled? Last week got pulled over for overdue license plate registration on one of the Toyotas and since we have multiple vehicles I checked them all. VW is expired as well and proof of insurance cannot be found as well as registration which comes with license plate registration. Strike 3 I’m out can’t drive till all papers are in order. Sad I’ll blame all this on getting older, brain fart.

Been driving everyday. I have a magic fuel gauge. The more I drive the gauge shows more gas in the tank, I am almost full or empty, LOL... Guess I need to check this out.

Yesterday I was out driving the old bug again, I only covered about 60 miles but I came across this place which goes unnoticed by most. Look close does it look familiar somehow?

If you can’t quite put your finger on it or maybe you did I’ll just say it was designed by the same architect that did the World Trade Center buildings 1 and 2 in New York. Many of the same design features are incorporated into this building as well. It even dates from same time period this one being 1975.

Minoru Yamasaki has a Wikipedia page and it’s really worth looking at to view his work around the world.

Got a good heavy rain over the past 48 hrs and washed all the salt away so you know what that means!

Ms. AlmostHeaven and I got the bug out this evening for about a 2 hour drive. Always a good day when you're driving the air-cooled in January Very Happy

Alright 2 for 2 I got in the bug early today 36 degrees having left it out overnight because I usually store in a metal building.

Spent the night nestled between two Priuses, the old and the new tech coexist Very Happy

Next stop check the air pressure in tires. It was getting hard to steer because fronts had gone down and I haven’t checked in a few months and the cold weather, I’m master at procrastination.

Oh and I had to add a little oil after the recent road trips but it’s been about 8 months since I last topped it off. I might even change next warm day Very Happy
