I am driving my '87 Westy from MD out to San Diego, CA soon to stage it for a Baja trip later in March 2020. I am flying back home from SD Feb 14 and flying back in for Baja, then flying back home after Baja and returning on April 29 to retrieve the bus and make my way home via Syncro Solstice in Moab.
So I need a place to park the bus near San Diego. Could be on street parking in a safe neighborhood. On someones property out of the way, etc. Worst case is I leave it in long term parking at the airport.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Try finding someone through the VanAlert app. If your worst case scenario is paying $1000+ at the airport, maybe you could make a cheaper arrangement with VW shops around that area. There are a lot of reputable ones in SD County. |

I might suggest gated RV storage places. A travel friend just did two weeks at one with a big trailer for like $50.
But that was in El Paso, so figure $500 in Cali. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

A lot of hotels near airports will have their own long term parking gigs. You dont even have to stay there. Try way.com
Cheaper than long term parking and they will still shuttle you to the airport. But nothing beats parking at a friends. |

If you can't find anything you like in SD, you could park it at my place and fly in and out of SLO airport (SBP). SLO connects to Denver, Phenix, LAX and possibly San Diego. It's an extra day of driving to the boarder, but you'll be 20min from GoWesty and Westy Works if you need anything. I doubt my wife would notice if there was one more van out back with the rest of the herd...

So after a lot of research:
So far no offers for a place to park near SD from facebook, samba, or Van Alert.
RV storage places are all booked, nothing open.
Way.com has no free parking listed, best is $7.95 a day near the airport.
A storage place in Chula Vista has drive in 10x20 spots in storage units at $210 a month. So far this is the best I can find but that is still real expensive....
Any other ideas? _________________ Dave O

I have been leaving my van off and on at the Dallas airport for the last few months. yes it has been expensive. I could have left it at the hotel for free. One of my classmates that lost his 2017 Chevy pickup by doing that. I think I have spent about $350 for secure off airport parking. $210 a month sounds pretty good to me. If my van got stolen it would be devastating to me. I would not be able to sleep at night when I was gone if the van was not pretty secure. John |

First congrats for doing something I have thought about for a while.
To me the $210 sounds great, I mean if you found a place for 1/2 that, what are you saving $100? Inside secure storage - I'd go for it and not even think about it. Of course, I much better at spending other people's money than my own. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

$120 a month for RV storage in SLC. I like SLC as a jumping off point for west coast adventures because most places are a day drive and round trip flights from BOS to SLC can be found for $300 on jetblue, direct.
The place I use washes my van for me and is a $15 uber ride away from the airport.
Also HI to everyone from Mass! |

not to be callous or crass but jet setting and storage are 1st world problems.
mostly just jealous while sitting here in frozen north east and a van awaiting a spring renovation of the roof and camping interior..
a few hundred more is inconsequential to the overall costs and satisfactions of the travel you have planned.. so jealous |

Oh this is definitely a first world problem!
Just trying not to spend money where I do not have to. In the end I will spring for the storage unit if that turns out to be the best option. _________________ Dave O
