Old thread, but I’m in SE Portland with a 59 bug.
Anyone know of a good painter who knows these cars? _________________ ----------------------------------------

I believe the owner of Trafton on Stark also owns a body shop or used to. Might be worth a call to see if that’s still the case or who they’d recommend. Let us know what you find and out.

Steves Imports does great body/paint work. Among other services.

Too funny! I bought the OP's pile 5 years ago. It needed/s allot of work.
It currently resides in my drive way torn apart. I steal parts from it for my current, driver 67.
The paint fade on the passenger door is a dead give away. It took a hit on the side and the hack that did the body work. Mudded about 3/4" of filler on the rear 1/4 panel.
I never did get the title for that car.

I'll second this, paint and body work aren't my strong suit and coupled with my OCD would mean i'd never enjoy doing paint and body myself.
When I finally saved up to get the paint and body done on my 67 which i've had since 93, I took it to Steve's and they did a fantastic job.
They kept to schedule and kept me up to date. There were some pinholes i discovered a couple of months after the work and they took care of it under warranty.
Really stand up folks.

Tearing into this thread...
I just picked up my first VW and have started the journey of the build. I'm an absolute cherry when it comes to VWs, they (mine) seems quirky yet easy to at least disassemble. As you can see, this isn't going to be a restoration.
I wanted to go full bore into making a drag bug. Currently the pan and body are all covered up in a barn in the valley.
Not seeing too much in the way of shop recommendations using the site search function, perhaps I'll ask here.
I'm ready to drop some serious coin on the front end, as the stock front end pictured is a basket case. I'm ready to get an RLR racing beam setup with adjustable coils and a disc brake kit (something around $4000).
The question I have is, who or what shop in the PDX area can truly handle the assembly on a pure racing setup? I've been looking at the Always V-Dub shop, but I dunno, as I have absolutely zero experience with the VW world and don't want to miss the "little things" if I did it myself...and have the front end fail me in the 1/4 mile.
Thoughts?
