Hi everyone, I have this distributor on the '56 engine that came with my '54 oval. I was thinking of putting it on my 1.6 engine. The problem is that the ID plate is damaged behind the br code, the number after it is missing.
Do you know guys how can I know if it is a br8 or a br25?
There are some photos

VJ4BR18
At first i thought it was a VJ4BR8 as the VJ4BR25 has the "knob" on the front and the VJ4BR8 has it on the left. But I can see it has a double stacked weight under the breaker plate and the second weight also looks double stacked. That would make it a VJ4BR18.
The VJ4BR18 has a 2 screw condenser mount while the VJ4BR8 has a single screw.
The VJ4BR18 has 32* advance which is way too much for for a VW 36hp engine. The VJ4BR8 has 17* and the VJ4BR25 has 22* which are both VW distributors.
VJ4BR8 - single condenser screw
VJ4BR25 - knob in front

Thanks Glenn!
So I shouldn't use it on a vw engine… Will it work on a performance vw engine or will it be too much for it too? _________________ '54 vintage speed beetle slow project

It's for a Porsche 356, don't use it on a VW, even a hi-po.. it has too much advance.
Sell it and get a VJ4BR25 or a 010. _________________ Glenn

If you do decide to sell it you will get more money for it by replacing the badge or at least including it with the distributor unattached when you sell it. You can find a BR 18 badge at Stoddard Porsche parts. In order to properly install the badge the entire distributor must be disassembled. _________________ Roads Scholar &

The Stoddard (right) is pretty close to the original (left).
You don't need to take it apart, you can carefully remove the hollow rivets and install the new badge.

I've found that driving the badge pins from the inside out leaves the head in good condition. _________________ Roads Scholar &
