ISP Tachometer went kaput. Worked for about 6 months. Then one drive, it was registering 3k RPM correctly, then started pinging back and forth a bit (down to zero and back) before resuming the correct 2,500-3,000. Later on the same ride, it crapped out and stopped functioning, resting where you see it now. (Not at zero)
What should I look for to analyze?

Would repair cost more than a brand-new VDO unit? My VDO tach has worked flawlessly for over 4 decades. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. He didn't ask what to replace it with. He wants it analyzed. |

Is there a standard list of things to check when these go awall?
Loose power source wire, or other wire? I read about them having a bad ground. Grasping at straws. |

I’d call ISP and see what they say. If it’s only 6 months old isn’t there a warranty? _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

Time flys. I've had it exactly a year.
I went with this brand because the background of the dial looks similar to the stock VW speedo. Don't know how solid they are.
I'll stick my head in the trunk to see if anything is loose. Getting it serviced would prob cost more than the $99 to get a new one. |

Try disconnecting the wires from the tach to see if that gets the needle to drop back to zero. If it doesn't drop to zero with them disconnected, the gauge is toast, but if it does then you'll need to look further into the wiring. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

If electronic points, check that the base plate doesn't have moisture or corrosion under it. |

Confirming disconnecting the wires did not return the needle to zero.
I'll see how much a repair would be, but leaning toward another $100 for a new unit. |

If you like the looks then go to N. Hollywood speedometer and look at the authentic gauges they sell for Porsche/VW.

Hello,
I had the same problem this fall. i had the tach stored unopened for 6 months to put it in my car last spring. after a few months my tach went haywire to. Kaput.
I contacted Alex from ISP and he sent me a new one. He asked me if i connected the +12V from the ignition switch to the main wire. He explained me also that there has to be an in-line fuse of 10 amps in the main 12V line. Constant 12V on the main can burn out the tachometer. Guess that’s what happened to mine. So it needs to be cut-off of 12 power when the engine is not running. At least that s what Alex From ISP wrote.
I haven’t had time yet to install the new one. When i do and i tested the gauge i’ll post an update.
I find the service of Isp really good since i live in the Netherlands wich is all the way across the big atlantic pond and even then they sent me a new tach.
@ Alex and team, Thnx.
Hope this one stays alive 👍 |
