I've removed steering columns off type 1s and it's pretty straight forward. I've removed gas tank and end of column from coupler . Can't pull steering column out. I haven't done anything inside. Trying to pull out column with steering wheel attached. Am I missing something?

Ah! So the whole column comes out with steering shaft. No way to just take out shaft and leave column secured?

Nope. You have to pull everything of the column out.
