I bought some VW parts the other day, along with it... was this motor. Someone mounted a mounted GM Alternator to a VW Generator. HAHA...

Looks like they welded the bracket to the generator body! Hope they removed the innards before applying all that heat! Maybe they didn't; is that a torn pulley at the left?
Looks like a modern take on this VW design, probably for police or ambulance service:

Really, what does it matter, it was probably not in working condition anyway
Have seen that before, pretty ingenious. _________________ Rick

Now that is interesting!!
What I can't understand is... why not just replace the generator. Or buy an alternator... so easy to install. Why go through the hassle of mounting a GM alternator welded to a VW Generator...
Some people.... |

I wish I had a picture of it but my first Ghia had the stock generator to run the car and an alternator attached to an A/C compressor bracket to run the stereo.
Two separate batteries as well. _________________ Volkswagen!

Why? because that is a small amp 6 volt generator and they probably had that larger amp 12 volt alternator just lying around waiting to be used.
That is how people fixed things back then. They just didn't go out and buy everything new like nowadays. It was called barely getting by _________________ Rick

I bet they did not remove the generator insides before welding it the reason to do this would be if you had the thing and a welder and did not want to pull the generator to fix it. I wonder if they bothered to run the fan belt to cool the engine? _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

I have seen pictures of the dual generator set up before. As noted....it for police/fire/ambulance.
Why did they want an alternator?
Who wouldn't?....and looking at the age of that thing...just guessing....back in the 70's/80's....alternator set ups for type 1 were not everyday fare.
That being said.....when my type 4 engine goes back together in my 412.....I'm getting rid of the damn 55 amp alternator and putting in a Delco 10si...hopefully ....(which has upwards to 72 amps) ...or possibly a CS130....which is 100-105 amps
https://www.hemmings.com/blog/article/delco-cs130-alternators/
You can buy them rebuilt...good quality or even new...moderate quality.
It will take some pulley and mounting bolt work....but nothing like welding it to the old alternator

i've seen that in some buggies from down under,
they run a longer belt
use the old gen as an idler to run the cooling fan |

A couple of other interesting items on that Beetle, no hoses on the fan shroud for the heating/defrost system and of course the mandatory plastic automatic fire starter mixed in with the high tension wiring between the coil and distributor! |
