I have that catalogue and the tee shirt, from my visit to Vintage VW Parts in 1980.
in 1978, I bought a non working AM radio, for the pod on my1950 11G, for $450 from our house guest, one Mr. Terry Shuler and the following year, a ribbed 1950 split rear bumper for $500. I was thrilled to get both items...
I always made more money sellin' than buyin' vintage VW parts - some stuff was very reasonably priced and some outrageously, crazy expensive - much the same as today - dollar for dollar, not much has changed... gotta' remember what salaries were, back then - it's all relative...

Is or was ??? Vintage Parts Inc Burbank the same company?
Still have their catalog and price list from the 90s.
At that time I ordered many parts for the restoration of my Bug early Oval 1953 and was much cheaper than ordering parts in Europe.
Same with Stoddard for the restoration of my 911S MFI 1970.

Aside from the 1978 prices, the mere availability of the early pieces is quite striking.

It's moot now, but that radio looks like a post-56 Blaupunkt (buttons are no longer chunky) installed in that faceplate adaptor. The black push buttons would make it correct for a Canadian Custom with black dash knobs, or it would be correct in another German car.

Well, I lived there for 25 years and never knew about these folks!

Has it closed yet? website under construction... not a good omen... maybe I can stop by sometime soon, or ask friends nearby. BUMMER!!!

I don't remember if it was Bob or Shawn when I phoned a few times from Belgium for information about some parts.
What I do remember is that I woke them up once at 6 in the morning. I was wrong about hours.
Despite my poorly spoken English, they were always friendly and helpful.
At that time it was normal to order by fax.
I must still have the order and the bill somewhere.

they sell stuff on eBay . there handle is vintagevwparts.
looks like they sell the same repo parts you can get anywhere.
I doubt there is any good n.o.s. gems from the 80's left. sad.
I knew bob was gone. I did not know about Shawn.
it is good there keeping the name alive and the hobby going.
those places are going away. we lost kohlweiss and donsco up here
in nor cal.

Every time I was in the area, I’d been stopping by Vintage Parts Inc since 1995. Back then, they were in a huge building on Victory Blvd. Their showroom was filled with killer vintage parts and accessories. They even had one of those Wrought Iron Wedding Beetles in the showroom. Walls were adorned with posters and rare parts.
Then in the late ‘90s, they downsized to a smaller building on San Fernando Blvd about a mile from their original location. No more showroom, but Shawn was always willing to let me sift through his shelves for countless NOS goodies. Heck, I still have quite a few of the “Blue box” NOS parts in my collection that I bought from him. I remember when Volkswagen AG cracked the whip and told Vintage Parts to stop selling the license plate frames with any VW logos on them. Since Shawn couldn’t officially sell them, he just gave them away. Still have a pair of those bad boys
Over the years, I got to become friends with Shawn and he always gave me some great deals. Unfortunately, Shawn (RIP) passed away in the Summer of 2017

I think the news article got some of its facts wrong though. Bob & Beverly Scott (original owners) were Shawn’s In-laws. Sherry is a Bob & Beverly’s daughter.

history of Vintage VW Parts. Inc - attachment to my 1/1998, parts price list...
Vintage Parts Inc... formally Vintage VW Parts. Inc was started by Bob Scott in 1972 - was an English teacher at Glendale CC... He traded his 1949 MGTD for a split window bug and bought a load of VW parts, to sell,. At first was open only part time, but within 2 years, he quit teaching and was selling VW parts full time.
At first, only sold split window parts - The first catalogue lists semaphores for $18.00 and NOS heart tail light assemblies for $30.00, each. - then oval parts and so on...
… eventually they added manufacturing of over 100 Vintage VW parts - Bob retired in 1994 - then his son, Shawn, took over...
