Has it been done before? Can it be done? I would think it possible using round buckets and slapping the 86 grille over the lights. Hmmm, now I’m wondering if you would have to use the smaller diameter inner lights for the outers as well. I think something like this would be pretty cool and unique. What do you all think? Stupid idea?

I PM'd him this morning asking if he would host the photos here and rebuild the thread. He is still active here.

Hopefully he will........

‘86 formerly square became round. P.O. did the bucket install and I did the LED’s

I’ll try to snap a pic of the buckets

On my old Syncro project, my mechanic at the time managed to jam in a second set of 7's for a double headlight. I tried to do it again on my feuerwehr Syncro, but it wouldn't fit right mainly because of the sheetmetal bump out for the clutch pedal behind the light. I had to get a pair of Hella driving lights that were much thinner for better clearance. Samba member Unibagel was able to create a surround that matched the curves of the grill. I dremeled out the plastic and glued everything together. Very time consuming to avoid breaking the plastic grills. With plastic 3D technology, you can create your own surround and mate it up to the center section of a donor grill.

The old Syncro project lights -

What it was suppose to look like after the grill modifications. This had a simple cut out with no surround.

Smaller Hella units with a Unibagel made surround glued in.

That looks pretty good and I actually like it better without the surrounds!

I needed the surrounds to cover up all my cutting mistakes and to hide gaps. Smile

I think that looks awful, to be honest. It doesn't preserve the van's style at all and makes it hard to sell later too. (Nobody wants to buy someone's butcher mods)

The stock square headlights look best, no doubt. My H4 Ecode's have a great beam too.

Right, cuz the most important thing about owning a vehicle is selling it.

What you especially don't want to do is modify anything that can be removed and replaced with the stock component in 5 minutes or less, that would royally fuck things up. You're only allowed to mod things that take at least 18 shop hours to reverse.

Maybe it's my age having grown up with round sealed beams, but a four set would probably look best with the smaller 4 1/2” units. Like an old 60's Chevy Impala.

No Doubt? Personally, I like the round headlights, either the stock2-light set-up or the SA Grill. I converted my square set-up to rounds and next is the South African set-up.

Yet, I've seen a lowered van with BBS wheels and a few other mods, and that van looked great with Rectangular lights.

Doesn't really matter what one chooses- we are not chopping the top here - any light /grill set-up can be changed to whatever is one's preference with little time or effort.

Um, thanks for the unsolicited critique. You could have said it's not to your taste.

Those were 5-3/4” lights on the 60’s Chevys.

Never measured them! Thanks for the correction, appreciate it!

I don’t buy a Vanagon unless it has six headlights, so this mod has done half the work for me. It doesn’t make your Van harder to sell, if the people who don’t like it have no money
