Funny that green bug is still there. Lahaina is very dry. That bug hasn’t moved in 10 years.
There’s plenty of dubs in Hawaii, just check their FB pages. There’s regular cruises all the time. Even a Big Al ride. _________________

... was once on the island (1 x 3 miles) of Utila, off the coast of Honduras and on the whole island were 3 vehicles and zero VWs... I think all were Toyotas. Of coarse everyone walks or bicycles around..
The thing that impressed me was how homogeneous the races were... really, race was not an issue... maybe we Americans will become that sophisticated someday. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

We could take a lesson from Hawai'i and consider the "natives" who were a welcoming culture that incorporated visitors from all over the Pacific for hundreds of years.
...though perhaps to a fault, given the decimation that followed with the Europeans. |

Big Al .. Al's home garage in Wailuku was possibly the largest stash of used VW parts in the islands. We'd give Al all our unused parts and then buy them back after 10-20 years of storage. Good times ;^ ) _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Get this. I live in an area that is considered the largest military concentrated area in the world....Norfolk, Va. Beach, Portsmouth. While the VWs were certainly here and growing in number from the late 1960s until the mid 1970s..they started to decline in number. Today, like Oahu and Maui, they are indeed a rare sight. You would think that they are tucked away in garages all over this place but they are not. |

Spezialist (or anyone), are there any shows/swap meets on Oahu planned for the 4th of July weekend? I've been combing the desert and have turned up nothing. |
This one was built by me on Maui shipped to Kauai and then to Oahu and owned by Hawaii Vintage VW Guy, saw him with my bus at a pro-bowl day vintage VW swap meet, probably through I was bsing him about it.
Keep it LOCAL

Me - ex-USAF
In the late 70's stationed at Grand Forks AFB - leaving a young ladies home in the morning and saw a 1955 bug (black) at a neighbors place. Purchased the car.
PCS'd to Hawaii (Hickam) did some work on the bug at the auto hobby shop (the guys there stopped a theft of my doors!)
Got married.
PCS'd to Edwards AFB (B-1 Test Team). Wife hated car so I sold it to an airman that was returning home to Hawaii.
Sound familiar to anybody? Anybody know of my old car there in Hawaii?
Aloha,
Dave |

Everytime I’ve visited the islands, there’s never a shortage of Pre ‘75 air cooled VWs. Here’s a hint, join the Hawaiian Facebook pages. The locals are always having low key gatherings. Usually not for the mainlanders, but I’ve always been welcomed.
Hot VWs magazine is constantly featuring island VWs, especially from Oahu. This ‘63 Double Cab is a staple in the North Shore.

I've often thought there were very few VW's on Maui. Yesterday changed my mind completely after participating in the 10th annual Big Al's Memorial Cruise. The meetup began at Maui Auto Parts in Wailuku where the route was laid out, with a poker run game collecting a new card at each stop along the way. A large group set out and visited the following locations:
* Iao Needle State Park
* Haiku
* Ma'alaea Harbor
* Kihei Community center
Quite honestly, I've never seen so many *built* turbo engines, dual Weber 48's, and juiced engines. Paint jobs were often immaculate, showing extreme pride of ownership. Plenty of Myer's Manx dune buggies, busses, and every flavor of bug were present. It turns out folks are just keeping these gems hidden ...
