Both U911 type batteries have expired. What are alternatives for going to the newer small red, yellow top or other jell type batteries. Would prefer to use just one battery. What wiring updates are needed to install. |

Not hard, most folks just remove the crossover cable between the two batteries and install an Optima red top on its side in the driver side box. Go over to Pelican parts BBS (forums.pelicanparts.com) and look for my post where I (harryd is my handle) show my Optima install in the 911 forum.
Best of luck. _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White

Harryd,
Found your 2008 thread on Optima install post. Hoping to find a battery that would fit in either compartment.
Anyone found a single battery since then that might be a better fit?
Original size 6.88 W, 8.19 L, 6.88 H. One battery would need approx 600 cold cranking amps???? |

There basically 4 options:
1 2 ea interstate batteries
2 2 ea sonnenschein batteries
3 2 ea Miata battery.
4 1 ea optima _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White

Good threads all.
The Batteries Plus Odyssey PC1200 looks like the perfect 1 battery replacement. Unfortunately the price quoted for it today $233.99 is approx. equal to two Interstate 911's ($124.99 x 2=$250.00). In addition you have to buy the post adapters for the Odyssey.
So much for saving a buck or two or three or....
Ps. The Interstate invoice for $79.95 each from two years ago in the above thread shows how much things have gone up. I did mention it but the local Interstate dealer didn't bite. |

The real reason to go to a AGM battery is to prevent the corrosion from the traditional lead/acid battery. Unless you need the concours points, get an Optima red top. you car will thank you even if your body man does not. _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White

I looked at the Optima this morning and the smallest one is just is too big to fit into the existing battery box. I am going with the Odyssey PC1200. It's actually a hair smaller than the battery box and the Interstate battery and should fit. I think the stock straps will also fit. It's also rated at 550 CCA. Best part is a better price after some discussion about a competitors coupon I got in the mail yesterday.
Thanks for the forums input and prior threads.
Ps. The body man still may be happy as there is obvious damage from years ago that was patched over but not fixed correctly. That's a story for the future. |

Looks nice but be sure to ensure the postive terminal is 100% covered or you will learn why you can stick weld with a car battery.
If your leads are long enough, I would flip the battery over so the leads are on the top to prevent something conductive from sliding between the post and the metal floor. _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White

Harry,
After thinking about your post I did take another look at the way the cable was routed and found a way to make it longer. Ending up putting the cable connectors on top.
While looking at the cable channel found what I assume is the original positive battery cable end cover. Black rubber fitting with recess that matches the stock cable end.
Looks great
Thanks |

Good to hear. Be sure the positive terminal is completely covered. _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White

Update
The single Oddessy battery I put in my 1969 911E in 2012 finally died.Still shows 12 volt but the amps just are not there anymore.
Thankfully 7 years not too bad. Pricey but it did last.
Replacement on the way |

Are they still available? I have heard they were discontinued.
Also, the compelling reason for going to an AGM battery is to reduce corrosion in the battery box. This is why I went to an Optima. _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White
