It's 2" higher than a group 41 so I bet it won't fit, but has anyone installed a group 24 under the driver seat?

Thanks

Neil.

link to battery in question

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/group-24-starting-deep-cycle-battery-0102499p.html#.VOY1fyhiEy4

i'd read of larger batteries being installed by modifying the lid to accommodate battery posts.

It wouldn't be hard to cut off the smaller threaded posts on this battery.

You can do almost anything that you throw enough time and cash at.

But 2" higher is significant and I would think that it will interfere with sliding the seat back.

Thanks for those diagrams Dave. Wishful thinking on my part. Even IF group 24 height specs are measured to top of battery posts, posts are maybe 3/4" ?

I agree. The battery case would likely interfere with the seat base.

I do recall seeing a project involving increasing depth of the battery box but that ain't gonna happen here! Wink

Some people were fitting Group 65 as an aux on the driver side.

Thanks Mark.
Yes, had seen that and will reconsider it.

Maybe I could find a similarly priced
($107 Cnd)
starter/deep cycle 65 here.
Or while I'm in the US this weekend.

No sure about the fitting.
But I do have some experience with the 24/M battery .
We use these in our compact electric palette jack and palette stacker.they last -/+ 2 years heavy abuse.
I always replace with cheapest replacement available.
And they cheap and readly available.

Since I'll be looking at batteries anyways, I'll measure this group 24. .... or I'll just WallyWorld it with a group 41.

Cut out the bottom of the box and a 24 or 27 will fit. Wink

I wonder if large tires would hit the outer box corner box when off-roading. I noticed and angle on the outer bottom off the original battery box.

A group 27 just fits under the cover in the vanagon, with very little room to spare...

In my experience, you want to measure the particular brand you are considering if things are close. The standard group dimensions seem to be pretty reliable for length & width -- but height, I have found, varies a bit from one manufacturer to another.

In any case T5s are common enough at America's favorite store and are so small you can fit a copy of War & Peace or Ulysses in there along side it (and probably should to keep it from sliding).

It was not possible to include the little 'angle' corner and still fit the 27 in the box. Depending on wheel offset and suspension height, the tires may or may not rub in 'full lock', this one did a little bit but in a year of use in Colorado and 1.5 years in all conditions around Latin America the new owners have experienced no problems.

A group 27 is just over 9" tall, so no, it does not fully fit (flush to top) into the stock box w/o modification to the depth.

I kinda like the idea of this honkin' battery.
And Cosco has a 105Ah Group24 that they say will last 3500 discharge cycles ($700).
The posts can be unscrewed.
the remaining case (no posts) is 10.2L x 6.6W x 8.8H
What's the word on this mod, can it be done to fit the Group24 without the tire hitting it?

Yes, the group 24 should be less length and allow for the corner angle to be retained - BUT have a look at these, I'm using a pair of them in my 16" van build:

Wow thanks Karl!!

I need a new battery now,

Victron B1421100081(M6 posts) is ~ $300
260x168x215mm = 10.2 x 6.6 x 8.5, appx Group 24 as well

But $700 is a LOT of dough.
But if it's really 3500 full cycles, that's a full discharge cycle every day for 10 years.
With the solar panel my refrigerator cost is like $1300
And the modification effort for the box too.

I'm not sure why you would spend $700 for a battery that can be bought for less than 1/2 that? Or is the Costco battery not agm?
