This one has bugged me since I got the car. The 1/4 round ratchet was too far aft so the tab in the tunnel wouldn't keep the sprocket from rotating when pulling the brake handle. I cut off the handle bracket and moved it fwd about 12mm so that the tab would properly engage the sprocket.

For some reason the slots for the heater handles on the sides and in front of the brake handle have been closed off with a plate from the inside of the tunnel. I can't tell if it was factory done or by a previous owner. I'm guessing '73 isn't supposed to have the handles. So why did Volkswagen even punch the holes in the frame? And then cover them with another plate? The biggest anomaly is how the whole handle assembly ended up so far aft that the tab wouldn't engage the slot in the sprocket. All of the welded were pretty janky but looked like they still could have been factory.

The little tab breaking / bending / cracking is very common across all Type 1 VW’s.

On my current thing a PO had put globs of Brass on the tab trying to Braze the cracks back together, so I just cut the whole tab area out and welded a thicker piece that went all the way across.

Dennis Domeck did a clever repair by welding a steel tab to the ratchet which gave a positive grip on the tunnel.

Does the little tab in the photo look modified? Is it supposed to be longer? Seems odd for such a narrow tab to be any longer than it is in the pic. Is the slot in front of the tab supposed to be open. Not even sure what would go there.
