Anyone re-make the climate control levers?

I've seen some nice anodized aluminum ones for Bay windows - but nothing for the vanagon.

I still have what I think are original - but one is pretty much trashed, and I think a nice billet anodized aluminum set would be super nice...

Is anyone 3D printing metal parts? Or is that insanely expensive?

Thanks - I see that one - I don't really know anything about 3D printing.
Has anyone tried these - they look a bit rough?

Ie how do you improve resolution?

Can these be done with Aluminum? or steel?

I have a 3D printer and printed them. With 3D printing you will always see the printed layers to some extent. You can change the layer height to get smaller lines but most of the time you will still see them.

I'm not sure about printing with metals.

I do believe Chris at Uniwerks Design wrote that he expects to be 3D printing metal this year.

Those with air-cooled early vanagons who take the shifter box out often find that the plastic guide (VW called it a "bumper") has disintegrated, or is missing. Without it, shifting can be sloppy, or the van can pop out of gear. Mine's been missing for who knows how long. The part has been NLA for a long time, too. It's no problem to get one for the WBX, but it's a different design from the AC shifter box. It would be an easy part to 3D print. The old one popped into the holes you can see below on the left of the shifter box.

I can reverse engineer that and make the part. Message me: [email protected]

As part of my Doka TDI conversion I'm using a Saab 900 intercooler tucked in by the drivers side D pillar. I picked up a generic 7" 12v fan from amazon to improve air flow. However, rather than using the shroud that came with it, which didn't fit nicely on the intercooler, I decided to design and 3d print an entirely new one.

Very nice, it truly looks to be OEM!

I have several questions if you don't mind (I'm slowly getting into 3D printing myself, possibilities are endless!):

1 - What program did you use to design the piece? I've used Fusion 360 a little bit, but the last couple weeks I've been using OpenSCAD and so far, I'm liking it quite a lot.
2 - I assume you used ABS, ASA or a similar plastic due to the high temperatures in the engine bay, correct?
3 - Lastly, what printer did you use? It seems to be a fairly big piece.

Thanks, that's what I was going for. My 3d printer has been invaluable for the restoration of my Doka, the amount if little clips I've made which are NLA or just custom for my conversion have been incredibly handy.

Regarding your questions:
1 - For all my design work I use Fusion 360.
2 - Initially was intending to go with ASA, but due to warping and layer adhesion on a print of this size I gave up on that. So I went with a Carbon Fibre infused PETG, minimal warping and excellent adhesion, it can withstand air temps up to 80 Celsius, so hopefully temperature won't be a problem, with the air flow from the fan cooling it, I don't think it will be.
3 - Printer is a Prusa i3 MK2S, This print was about as big as I can go, had probably 1 cm spare on the longest dimension. The print was broken up into sections to save filament and time, the inner grill piece and the main shroud are separate pieces (each taking 12-14 hrs) which I then screwed together. As one piece it would have taken something like 38 hrs because of all the support material it would have needed to print.

Wow, Garbaldie, this is such a nice fan shroud, it looks perfect!! Skills!

I read that you did a lot of little NLA part, you didn`t make the clutch line clip holders by any chance?
Same as the brake ones but for a thicker steel line, part number 261201249.

I usually drill out the brake clips but it`s rather tricky.

Aloha!

I did make up a clutch line clip, though the one I modeled is based upon part number 281201367C (that was the only clip remaining on my Syncro which I could model one after). I made up several of these to hold the steel clutch line, the two style of clips are interchangeable since the holes they fit in are the same size.

Another handy clip I made up is a little adapter to replicate the special NLA zip ties which snap on those small pegs in the engine compartment and underneath the van (you can actually see them holding wiring harness in the pic from my previous post).

I'm more than happy to send along the files of any of these parts if anyone wants them.

I've got another impressive part I've made up for my conversion, but I'm gonna keep it under wraps for a bit until I now it's going to function the way it should.

Yup, that's the part number for the clip I usually drill out Smile
I have a friend who built his own printer and does surfing foils that he glasses with resin and carbon fiber. He can print them for me.
I'll send you a pm for both files Smile

281201367C doesn't need to be modified to fit the clutch line as it's meant for it. On my Syncro, the one original clip still remaining was just back from the radiator holding the line to the frame. It looks like this:

Oh, my bad, I should have typed and reviewed the part number you gave to look it up, I have never seen this clip on a van, interesting!

I was thinking 291611767 not 281201367C.

That`s the brake line clip 291611767 I was referring to:

The clutch line clip 261201249 is exactly the same, but for a thicker line.

VW seems to have used the two types of clips interchangeably, as they are both shown in the Syncro clutch diagram, #42 and #38.

Yeah, I saw that, I never trusted that drawing bc also #37 part number 431971848C

has the same look as #42, so I didn`t even think they were the same size or application. The clip 431971848C is on Thingiverse btw.
Good to know now, thanks Garett! Cool
