Amazing pictures in this thread, thank you for sharing! Love those dormobiles

Great picture and nice bus! Looks weird to me, seeing the Dormobile hinges on the other side of the roof. Actually, I wonder why they would do that? I can’t see a good reason

I assume it’s to keep the windows/vents on the passenger side and above the stove, since that earlier dormobile is a LHD whereas the others in this thread are RHD. Just a guess. _________________ Erik |

I wonder where the stove would be in that bus? Ours is next to the slider, so actually on the side of the canvas rather than the vents. I’m sure there’s some logic involved... _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Ahh, I guess I was wrong. I figured the stove was in the long cabinet on the far wall, so that debunks my theory! _________________ Erik |

I believe that one posted is a Westfalia with optioned Dormobile top (top is farther back over the sunroof hole and Westy/Dormy tops open that way opposite way from what I've seen.)
My '71 Dormobile is LHD and still pops open the way yours does with hinges on the right side facing forward and the top is in the same location. _________________ 1964 Type3 Notch

If you're referring to mine, it was a highly optioned Westfalia SO-69, Oslo Dormobile:
Just for reference. I can remove these if you don't want me cluttering up your thread. Not a lot of information on Dormies out there. _________________ I've never met a Bus I didn't like.

Absolutely no problem Bulli Klinik, great to see the pictures.
I thought I should update the thread to confirm the fact that the whole trip has been cancelled (or, I should say postponed).
Not only have flights been cancelled, then 14 days self isolation for visitors to Australia, then shut down to foreign visitors. Actually, I had already made the decision to cancel my leave so that I would be able to work in our specialist children’s hospital.
Who knows what the future will bring, but be sure I will reactivate this thread when I know anything!
I’ll leave you with the latest picture of ‘Olive’. I do hope we will see her for real sometime soon!

You don't see that type of Westy a lot with US-specs! Normally an early bay US-Westy is a Westfalia SO-67. The one with the walk-thru. But yours has a full-width partition (M500).
A friend of me had almost an exactly the same version of this bus. It was also US-specs, SO-69 and had the Dormobile roof. First I thought the Dormobile roof was fitted afterwards. I mean: why would Westfalia produce buses with pop up roofs from another camper company? Later I found out this actually is original. They were available with a Dormobile roof as an option.
But as far as I know not for the regular US-market. I have seen these buses with 'export' destinations in Germany (but delivered with US-specs). So they might have been delivered to Army personel and as Tourist delivery.
I don't know why the Dormobile roof is never seen on buses delivered new inside the US.
Do you still know what export destination was on the Mplate of this bus? _________________ currently starring in my fleet:

You are correct. These Westfalia Dormobiles were only available for German delivery from what I understand. I had a brochure at one point which showed the SO-69 options and stated German delivery only.
I purchased mine from the original owners who ordered the Bus while stationed in Frankfurt. I believe that mine was from the Otto Glockler dealership. The original owners told me it took nearly a year from order to delivery. _________________ I've never met a Bus I didn't like.

'at one point' means you no longer have it?
I am curious what info was in this brochure. I couldn't find this information on the brochures here on TheSamba. So if you have it I am interested in scans or pictures of the pages.

What a coincidence. I had a 'Glöckler' dealership pouch in my hands yesterday . Also from Frankfurt/Main. Bought it at a meeting years ago. Must be the same dealer. _________________ currently starring in my fleet:

So. I want to put together a very minimalist tool kit that I can take in my baggage half way around the world. Really just to deal with small issues that arise along the way.
It’s hard! There’s so much I would like to take (much of it based on previous experiences, but I’ve been as ruthless as I can. It (almost!) all fits into a neat little tool roll. I’ll list what I’ve got, and please feel free to comment on whichever of your pet tools I have missed out! Some larger things I will likely buy in Aus (eg wheel nut wrench).
Electrical multimeter with battery
Leather man multi tool
Small tin of grease
Selection of fuses
Selection of electrical connectors/piggybacks
Fabric insulating tape
Spark plug spanner
HD scissors
Small hammer
Angled forceps
2x artery clips
Fine sandpaper
Brake nut wrench 10/11mm
Selection of zip ties
Selection of electrical wire with croc clips
2x adjustable spanners. Open to 23mm
Alternator Allen key
Reversible screwdriver
Torch
Hubcap tool
Spigot for eg fuel line
Feeler gauges
Small vice grip
Side cutting pliers
Refurbished distributor with fresh points and HT leads

Well, this thread stalled big time when Corona hit eh?
Of course the grand tour road trip had to be cancelled, which was a massive disappointment all round. I offered to turn my unpaid leave back into full time work in the hospital (which was fine until the end of the first month, when the pay office thought I was on unpaid leave, and paid me accordingly!)
That’s all sorted now though and we are hoping to be able to reschedule the whole thing for next year. Luckily orchidkombi is being very tolerant and continuing to look after ‘Olive’ at his house. We’re very grateful!
The first thing he did In lockdown was to have a camping trip in his own driveway with the two matching Kombis!
There have been other small bits of work, inspecting the slight rust at the edge of the pop-top, installing a temporary 12v double outlet, and keeping the engine ticking over with a few local day trips. At least Olive is getting some use!
I may need to look into getting new keys cut, the old one is wearing a bit thin!
Lastly, she went in for an oil change service which would have been done before we arrived for the road trip, and the garage did a nice job on stripping and repainting the wheel rims in OG silver/grey.
Some pics of all of that!...

You will love the sheepskin covers, have had mine since purchase of my 78 Westy 15 years ago, cool in summer & warm in winter. Also add a bit more cushion. |
