I have seen your car on a facebook gallery page from the seller, too late, it was sold. After switching to Porsche wheels, do you still need the original ones Pray ? (don't really expect it)

Smile It is an excellent car, we bought it after only seeing photo's and talking with the seller!

Yes sorry, I will keep the wheels as I will only do things on the car that can be easily reversed and returned back to fully stock. Smile

Very good! I have seen so many people in UK and Belgique lowering these preserved original cars, throwing away the original components such as wheels and front axles... such a shame. Good to know, your car is in good hands.

I agree! My wife and I seriously debated doing anything to this car but we agreed it was nice to personalise it but to absolutely ‘do no harm’ 😀

Will you be doing any Belgian shows this year? We have booked in for the Ardennen Rennen vintage rally and hoping to do Le Bug Show too!

This weekend was a disclosure. You folks have been right, speeking from bad surprises...

We have recognized not to be be able to weld some patches on flaky pastry, so the car got divorced.

We have been able to open the channel on the left by fingering...

Even if it might be possible to save the right side, I decided to buy a pair of complete heater channels from Klassicfab. Gerson has the correct ones for the years 1960 to 1961, so this will be the best way to go with. At Classic Parts here in Germany they are listed as stock item.

I think about the process of dip coating the hole thing after the repairs. I hate to say it, but the car has many small spots and rusty seams all over. Also, the dash board has many places to weld and has to be completly painted. Dip derusting and coating will reach far more areas than the conventional processes. I want to prepare the car for daily driving without having fear all time, that the body will suffer from rainy weather. (Although the climate change is showing since three years, we have far more sun than rain. But the stormy and hard rain attacks are increasing)

What do you think?

It was time to fetch the heater channels from Gerson at VW Classic Parts

The split was kind enough to fulfil this job for his brother. He want his brother on the road asap , as he do not want to carry the winter rims any longer. He do not find them to be suitable for his look.

Started the replacement with the left side. The Gersons have a perfect fit, are really heavy due to a good qualitiy and steel plate thickness. But I feel to show you some little differences:

the lower half is longer:

the cuttings for the air duct are originally inverse D-shaped, the bended ones are stamped out larger. I think on trying to open them more.

After cleaning up I was surprised how solid the rear quarter panel is

Finally welded in

We did only measure for not destroying the original paint on the pillars by welding in a reinforcement. Before the complete welding, we only did some weld spots, mounted the door and checked the lining. Still have to replace the lower outer tin on the A-pillar.

Now the second channel is also in

there are still some places to weld

also closing the hole in the repro panel

During a friend is welding the body, I work on the chassis. The jack points have been replaced

Other thing is, I noticed a "worst case" for the clutch cable tube, as it is not longer fixed in the middle section.

But I have already an idea how to fix it without opening the tunnel. More soon, when this problem is solved.

Yes, your 63 is also not that bad. Hope you can salvage most of the og paint. If you want to raise your car to stock hight and give him back smothies, I would appreciate it. Too bad, but the only place you get correct heat-seamed ragtops in original vinyl is here in Germany at only one company spending several $$$... I did it at mine, and it was worth it. Never want to choose sewed vinly ragtops again.
Good luck on your project, seems that the engine is your first concern. Will open my original engine today.

Thank you!
For explanation: The pictures VeeDee is showing are from the surgery of my split. VeeDee had rebuilt the jack points and some other body panels by himself. More in the split thread, later by time.

Wow, nice thread and nice car! We also own a´60 , and I find it a curious mix between old and new. Ours is a long going project, a total basket case to start with, nowhere near as good as yours. Keep it original ( of course you will) and enjoy the experience!

Thank you! This '60 here is a bit different than yours, because it is model year 1961, with flat tank and already 34 PS... so it is not that same kind of mix between old and new.
All best for your project!

With corona, more time is available to continue the work on a beetle.
Yesterday, a friend welded the holes from the dashboard, still needs to weld in a part from the radio frame.
