|
|
Hi,
I know that about 500 SO-44's left Westfalia's factory.
I am at the stage of insuring mine and would like to prove to my insurance that this model is quite rare and that their value is higher than a usual kombi or perhaps other lines of SO's. (SO-42).
Does anyone here have some written documentation about the production numbers of SO-44's ?
Many thanks

here are some threads on SO-44 westys, I would check here for production # info
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?search..._chars=200
Value is not just on rarity. But on desirability. All Westfalia campers are desirable buses. I hope you have been collecting as much info on SO-44 value as you have been finding. ie screen captures of any ads. And actually, while the value of an SO-44 would be higher than a kombi, and I'd think a little higher than an equivalent condition SO-42, I would be surprised if it is higher than an SO-23 or SO-34 or some other, older, split bus Westfalia versions.
Regardless, collecting info on other Westfalia campers would at least give you something to compare to, something closer than to a kombi or an OTW camper.
You could also show what the selling prices were back in the day, as a value comparison.
When my Dad's 1970 westy was totaled, there were lots of nice 68-71 westys in the classifieds for comparables, so it was easy to find documentation to back up a claim of higher value than the $3000 the insurance company offered.
For your model it is harder to do that research.
Hope that helps. |

Thanks for your input Clara !
I agree with you on the desirability factor which certainly plays a huge part in terms of value.
I have found lately some ads, mainly about SO-42's, to document a file for the insurance. Sadly the chances to find an ad for a SO-44 are close to zero.
In one of the threads you sent a link to, someone mentions a book stating the production figures. I'll try to get a hand on it. |

There were only 500 SO44's made and they were European only production. There were 2500 SO42s made. |

There were closer to ~13,000 SO-42s made. This gives a roughly 26:1 ratio.
SO-42s were also produced only in Europe.
Here is a fabric # tag from a 26th May 1967 buildt SO-42
VIN 237 130 679, Westfalia Fabrik # 11938:

Thank you for the correction. Left a 1 off the front of that number.
While it isnt an Ad per se, I do have some pics of original dealer price sheets for an SO44. |

Ah, that makes sense now. I wondered why you thought 2500.
I think there are some documents in Paul's gallery as well.
