So I left for work this morning. Put my 69 bus in reverse out of the driveway. Pulled forward in 1st and heard a grind. I stopped, tried again... grind. Put it in reverse, backed up a little with no issue, then suddenly a grind. Then no movement at all. I found that the right axle was turning independently of the inner cv joint. The twisted boot was a dead tell. Obviously this is related to the problem, and my guess is that the splines are gone from the axle and cv. But it seems like I should have still had movement with the other axle. I am just worried that the spider gear could be shot as well. My understanding of a vw trans is limited. I have had a little more experience with swing axles. I am at work now and just trying to get a better understanding before I get home and start pulling it apart. Thanks in advance. |

More than likely it is a broken CV joint. That why seeing CV boot twisted.
Transaxle has open differential is why you are not seeing other axle moving.
When was the last time you had the CV axles off and inspected the CV joints and repacked them with grease? _________________ Joseph

I wouldn't worry about the transaxle internals, the behaviour you're seeing is perfectly normal for an open (non-limited slip or locking) differential. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Generally with a open differential the side with the least resistance will spin while side with most resistance will be "stationary"...
Typical of one wheel in mud hole and one wheel on solid ground, wheel in mud hole will spin while wheel on solid ground does nothing...
Go with diagnosis of axle and spline in CV has gone south, open things up a take look see, fix may be rather simple...

If one is broken I would inspect all 4. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

A while back I replaced the outer CVs, the inner ones looked very good, so I just cleaned and packed them. I have not heard any strange noises, but sometime things don't give a sign. If it is just the CV, and the axle is still good, that would be awesome. I could be back on the road tomorrow. Thanks everyone. |

Let's consult the expert on differentials, shall we?
Vinny Gambini:
And why not? What is positraction?
Mona Lisa Vito:
It's a limited slip differential which distributes power equally to both the right and left tires. The '64 Skylark had a regular differential, which, anyone who's been stuck in the mud in Alabama knows, you step on the gas, one tire spins, the other tire does nothing.

Got lucky. CV splines were gone, but axle splines are good. I had a new Lobro laying around I got cheap at a show as a spare. Pulled the axle Friday, got everything going and have a pair of CV's on the way to do the other inner and still have a spare around. |
