Thanks for all the replay, I've got the trans supported now and will probably have it out and inspecting it and resealing it before the engine is back in
I'll do my reading on the 1600 and try and clean up what I can from this and move forward. |

Wow! , somebody sure got a lot of miles out of a sick noisy 3 cylinder bus.
That head is toast, count on heads, pistons and cylinders at the very least, I'd split the case to look at the bearings just because the rest of it looks so abused.
Great pics of the plates and stickers, sadly neither are the ones that matter, look behind the LF seat for a painted stamped plate, that's got all the good stuff on it. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

You are looking for a M Code plate that looks something like this...
If it were me I would put a "torquey" Type 1 engine in that bus if the plan it to drive it very far. |

1972 type 4 engine, 4 speed, Dec 1, 1971, Neptune Blue, USA via San Francisco.. https://vw-type2-id.xyz/mplate/22071199/
There was a panel van north of Sacramento by about an hour, 10 years ago, that matches this description that had no engine, and they were putting in a type 1 motor. I wonder if this is that one. He sold it, and someone trailered it off about that time. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

take the crank, rods, and case to a shop that does type 1 work. Ask them to measure everything, and look it over. The cases get cracks in them too. Plan on a new oil cooler. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

And we're back in business. Found a local VW guru, shout out to John Morris, and had an engine built. I had some holes tapped for a remote oil filter, other than that, she's stock.
Now I need to find:
an actual bus exhaust (previously had a beetle exhaust)
A good clutch kit and resurface the flywheel
A remote oil system
But all and all I'm excited to get this thing on the road in semi short order!
Thanks for all of your help !!!!
