Hi all, I'm starting assembly on my buggy. Probably 66, not totally sure. Anyhow, I noticed oil leaking from where the steering shaft enters the steering box. I can't exactly ID this box, but it is VW OEM. It does not have grease caps.
Anyone fixed this seal before?
Does it require dismantling the box? I've been searching for hours, have yet to see one with the pinchbolt at the input shaft! Any help much appreciated!

That is an earlier style box than what the 66 would have had.

You can replace the seal without dismantling the box. You can look through my gallery I have a fair amount of pictures of the disassembly/reassembly of a box like this one. |

You can remove the seal, measure it and source it local doesn't have to be a VW seal

Wow! thanks so much! I've been searching here for hours, shoulda waited, I could have got some painting done.
So, it appears that the adjuster sleeve around the input shaft (With the flat spots) can be removed without removing the worm or other parts. Is that right?
Also, I see you swapped oil for grease, does that work out OK in the worm/sector old box? I've seen varying opinions, mostly leaning toward grease.
Or...Do you think a grease fill would eliminate leaking, thus negating the need for the seal altogether?

I used the corn head grease, I'd still use a seal with this style of grease especially as it would leak out too. As you mentioned there are varying opinions on grease vs oil for the earlier boxes. I felt better with grease and this style of grease is designed for applications like this.
And you're right about adjuster sleeve but you can replace the seal without removing it too. It goes on from the side that faces out so you don't have to take it out to do. Just have to remove the end that bolts to steering coupler since it's bigger than the seal is of course. |
