It was just a hole cut the same way as yours. By drilling a bunch of holes and it was right through the carpet. The little plate just had three louvers in it and there might have been one front and back, but I am not sure. I do remember that it was held on with machine screws and the nuts were on the engine side so it took two people to remove the screws. _________________ Chris

I am working on a October 1952 Zwitter and this is an interesting topic. My Zwitter had a 3" hole in front metal centered above the tunnel. This had a louvered piece of metal screwed to it. My guess it was for ventilation. There was no way to close it. The hole was neatly cut, no drill holes. No mark on the louver piece. Now the hole has been welded. |

There was round accessory vent available to mount in the front firewall. I came across it in the accessories section the other day. That one had way to close the vent though. mine had no way to close them either. just three louvers.
EDIT: found them.

They are cool but I see two issues with them.
1 can you imagine being stuck in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic? That thing would probably let a lot of exhaust from the car in front of you in.
2 in case of a crash where the gas tank was ruptured, gas could come in the passenger compartment. _________________ Chris

Those are two very solid points. Especially number 2! |

been doing some work on the zwitter. At one point in its life a tree limb fell on the roof. Been doing some hammer work to straighten it out.
I have been eyeballing those 3 fold rag clips made by vwsunroofs.com. It will take some saving up to purchase but I dont ever plan on getting rid of the car so it may be something I should purchase.

Back on this project. Replaced the Brazilian pans with the thicker Wolfsburg west ones.

welded in a dimmer switch section to the replaced firewall
Also set the body back in the pan. Been jumping between projects and its much easier with the zwitter only taking up one spot. Its not bilted or anything just sitting on top.

..might consider a few things - weld the rear fender tail light holes closed - look too high and not the right hole configuration for hearts - 2. weld the rear fender over rider holes closed - 3 might relocate the heater knob to behind the emergency brake.
Had an 11/4/52 Zwit for 19 years - yours looks great - love that it's a standard.
… here's the heart fender holes... on my '55 - same for the Zwit.
