Bumper mounting plate repair... Turned into building.

First measured the plate position before removing them. They are much worse than I thought. Was planning to fix them but they are too thin.

Probably should have got new plats. Thought about just welding flat plates but not sure I could sleep at night... Smile

Had some steel the correct thickness so started making one as a test. Made two parts to weld together. Seems like it will come out well. Haven't decided how to make the center indent. May try to press it in.

Think I finally replaced all the thin steel... now to get the mounting plates finished before media blasting.

Reshaped the override bumpers. Matches the front and old ones. I can't stop seeing the pointy bumpers now. I never noticed them before.

Nice work on the bumper guards. Never noticed how pointy the reproduction ones are. I’ll have to fix mine now. Just need an original one to copy from.

Did a quick test for pressing the indent into the bumper mounting plate. Worked very well with a cheep 12 ton press. Couldn't do any thicker steel though. Close to maxing out the press.

I will weld the die and round the corners some before pressing my mounting plates.

Everything for the bumper is finally ready for blasting. That took longer than expected although I only worked on it for a couple hours at a time so maybe not that bad.

Have the leftover pointy ends. One is good but needs a new splashpan bracket. The other is bad. Still thick around the edge so could be used to convert a slash bumper. Free to a good home. Smile

That is a front bumper. Rear has one nut on the inner set of holes. And yes I added a square nut to each. Smile

I didn't notice the other differences but my old guards were very bad.

The sandblaster needed some attention. Tee fitting on the bottom went past the point of usable. Replaced with some iron fittings and works great. New window in the blasting cabinet that I can actually see through.

Blasted a few bumper parts and sprayed on a thin layer of zinc. Uncovered a few holes in the overriders but was able to just weld them in.

Finally got the heads and connecting rods ordered so need to get the tins blasted and painted. Looks like I will need to steel one tin from the old engine. Missing one that goes behind the pulley.

Finally sandblasted the rear bumper. Wasn't looking forward to it Smile lot of pitted rust to clean out. Added a coat of zink to keep the rust away.

Uncovered some pinholes and going to replace a couple more thin spots. Also still have a few dents to smooth out.

Bolted the bumper mounts on to make sure they were straight before painting. One that was bent badly was still 1/4 low so adjusted it so both sit the same height.

Managed to get one set of doghouse thermostat parts out of two rusty sets I had. Change one flap and replace a section of linkage but all is good. Missing a spring but I can steal it from the old engine for now.

All my engine parts arrived so time to get that assembled. Way behind schedule but can't travel anyway.

Bumper metal finally done.

Welded in some pinholes. Smoothed out the dents. Much easier with the old paint and rust removed. Attached the mounting plates.

Assembled to make sure everything still fit before getting ready for paint.

Layer of epoxy primer and build primer on. It will need a skim coat of filler to cover the rust pits and imperfections.

Poor bus looking sad in the corner. Should be out exploring by now.

Time to get the transmission fixed.

Trans oil plug had a lot of steel on it. Definitely something bad in there. Figure it is a bad bearing on the input shaft as it rumbles in neutral. Also started jumping out of forth. Hopefully it didn't destroy too much.

Oil from the reductions was clean and no steel made it down there. Smile

Put my wheels on. Worked great untill I forgot I locked them and gave the bus a good push. Going to make another heavier set. Don't think I need them as wide to keep the bus stable.
