For the life of me I just can't seem to get the right size nut on the bolt that holds the battery clamp in place. 1973 standard beetle.
Any idea?
Thank you

Thanks... I tried that, but didn't work. I'm guessing the PO must have swapped something out. I ran out of a few different M sises and will buy more. I'll try some Standard sizes too.
Thanks |

Please post which one ends up working for you. I'd like to know as well. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Hi Vamram-... i did the unthinkable... I went to Lowes. Bought 15 bags of all kinds. Took the time to try one of each. Nada.
So I did put on a M8 x 1.25 as slalombuggy suggested. Came very close, but not perfect, so I did in fact tighten on.
I put some anti-seize lube on there so when my new battery dies in 4-5 years (I'm in cold NH), I can remove again. |

On one of my VWs, the stud broke off, over 35 years ago. I drilled a hole and inserted a bolt through from underneath, secured that in place on the pan with a nut, and then used a nut to hold down the battery mount.
I can't remember whether I stayed 8mm or did 5/16 inch, it's been so long.
I also didn't remember to retrieve the Vise-Grips I had locked onto the bolt head underneath the pan while tightening the securing nut, "found" it still there a month later. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Hi cusser , I never even thought about looking underneath to see any evidence of a drilling or different bolt put in. Now I’m curious. |

You'll be fine; you'll think of something if you have need.
