I have a 010 distributor with a very good badge but a lightly rusted body. I'm thinking of drilling out the rivets and having the body coated. I can think of several options.
Plating - black zinc $$, black cad $$$$
Cerakote - $$
Rattle Can - $
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Cheers,

I know they aren't 010 distributors, but I just rebuilt these R2s last night. One on the right is rattle can, one on the left is original paint. Just depends on the level of restoration I guess. I used lights coats so the casting/ machine lines and the date stamp weren't lost in a heavy coat of paint.

Mask the badge and paint it. It was painted from the factory.
One is NOS and the other is restored by me.
I did this one this morning.

The rivets will push out from the inside.
You'll want to remove the badge before you paint it. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

The painting process originally used by Bosch was very thin. Mask the badge and paint the body. Removing the badge risks messing it up. _________________ Roads Scholar &

X2 on pushing out the badge rivets from the backside, not hard to do, especially the button head ones with spiral shafts. A fine point permanent black marker (and blotting for uniformity) can be used to freshen up badly faded badges if replacement is not an option. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"

THIS
You're looking for trouble thinking you can remove it without damaging it. Masking it easy.
Again, one is NOS and the other is restored. The badge and paint is perfect.

I assume you are referring to individuals without much experience? I've removed tons of badges without any problems. I've also reattached them without any issues.
Sometimes that badge hides a little rust. I make sure I catch that and protect the unit. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

A ton is 2000#
And don't worry about the VERY little rust that can be behind the badge.

Another vote for NOT removing the badge as it's not necessary. I also paint the bodies as well as stripping all the old zinc coatings and any corrosion off the steel parts. I then re-bright zinc plate those parts for the like new appearance and years of corrosion resistance.
