I have searched galleries and threads and concluded that I am confused as to which generator is proper for 1966 Karmann Ghias. Unlike the replacement one that's currently on my car, the voltage regulator did not piggy-back on top of the generator. The voltage regulator is supposed to be mounted on the bracket on the left wheel hump by the battery.

This is the VR I identified as proper for '66 (let me know if I'm wrong):

The generator conundrum is that I have found two that claim to be '66 only: one has two push on spade connectors and the other has two screw on terminals. The part numbers on the generator housings are 0101302061 for the spade connector type and 0101302093 for the screw terminal type, based on photos I have found. Both read "7V45A17," which is assume are outputs of 7 volts, 45 amps and no clue what the 17 means. I believe both are 105mm in diameter. So what gives? Is one "early" '66 and one "late" '66? Or what's the difference between the two different units?

I'm trying to find one that's authentic to the build date of my car, December '65.

The 6 volt generator in my Ghia came with is fitted with the spade connectors. The connector suggests some plug would go in there but it is always used with spade connections. I converted to 12 volts and found a 12v generator with the same physical form. It doesn’t really matter which you use. Its just an appearance thing.

The terminals on the Bosch regulator are marked identically for 6 volt or 12 volt systems. The external differences are evident only in the stamping on the regulator’s foot that mentions the voltage range. 6 volt system mentions 7volts where 12 volts systems mention 14 volts. They look the same on the outside. Regulators do fail. You might find a nos unit or a good used one but possibly they might be a dud. I learned that the hard way.

The unit you have shown looks correct but I wonder if it has been tested.
Nicholas

Do you know the build date of your engine, Nicholas? My research has typically shown the black "plug block" with spade connectors and both wires are individually connected via the typical copper push on connectors. But I've also seen a couple with the screw on terminals. Despite having different part numbers, the output specs stamped into the case were the same. Still puzzled as to the rationale for the two physical connection differences, but if they both perform the same, I suspect the screw on terminals are earlier style than the spade connector type, given that my '67 bug has the same plug block style.

VR Part number on mounting bracket: 0190215025, Voltage and Amperage Range: 7A 7V 45A

I can only hope the one I bought isn't a dud since my go-to starter and generator service shop said they can't test external VRs. I guess it'll either work or not whenever I get the proper generator installed.

Does the larger 105mm generator specific to 1966 KGs require a "'66 only" generator stand, or will any stand suffice? Not sure if I have to replace my current stand to accommodate the '66 generator when I find one.

any 12 volt gen stand should work for the large diameter 6 volt gen.
Don't know which style generator is correct.
you need a new pulley also but I think a 12 volt is the same.

here is VW part # from the Bentley for the 1300 ghia with remote VR
generator 131 903 021
regulator 131 903 801

You have a pic of the engine bay and wiring? has it been fiddled with?

Thanks, Rick. I'll measure the diameter of the generator on my '67 bug (it's original to the car.) I have an extra generator stand from another '67 bug, so I may have already resolved that need. Gonna have to check on a strap and pulley, though.

I found this thread about the GR14X and a discussion about the terminal block.

Given that I've found both screw type and plug block terminals on '66 Karmann Ghias, I will posit (as I did earlier) that both are correct, with the screw type being earlier and plug block being a later type whose case carried over into '67 and beyond based on the thread link I posted above.

Yes, at some point a PO replaced the original generator with this style and lengthened the wires to reach the VR. I had voltage drop issues trying to start the car, so I temporarily added the jumper wire from the battery to the VR.

When I get the proper generator and VR installed, I will tidy up the wiring to be as it was originally. I'm trying to source the best maker of wiring harnesses to accomplish this.
