I am trying to understand the wiring diagrams for a 56 VW Beetle into the fuse box. It would appear to me, not having played with German engineering before, that VW is pulling power from both sides and doubling up on the fuse board.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

In the photo attached, wires are coming off both the front and rear of the fuse for power and some are doubled up... Is this correct?

I am using a more modern aftermarket fuse board on a resto project and as such trying to understand if all these wires are powered off the fuse on both sides the way it appears...

Thanks,

… I guess - best to just follow the diagram and by the time you're done, with the wiring, you'll understand the logic... Be thankful, this is not a Lucas system...

I've always thought VW did some curious things with wiring.

Am I wrong or are the headlight low-beams not fused? The high beams go thru the double fuse by the tank, but the low beams go right from the foot switch to the bulbs?

guess I never wondered-why VW or any other manufacturer designed their wiring routing the way they did as there is no one-way to do anything... that said, it is just best to follow instructions

It is all super simple wiring. Straight forward. Logical. Just the way I like it!

FYI, if it helps.
30 = battery power, solid red wire.
31 = battery ground, solid brown wire.
31b = switched ground, brown with a colored tracer.
15 = ignition, key on power, solid black wire.
58 = parking lights, gray (front left & right), gray with red (right rear) or black (left rear)
58b = dash lighting, gray with red tracer
56 = headlight power supply to dimmer relay, white with black tracer
56a = headlights, solid white
56b = high beams, solid yellow
54 = brake light, black with red tracer
50 = starter motor solenoid feeder, red with black tracer
53 = wiper motor feeder (black), also has 53a (black with purple tracer, 53b (black with yellow tracer) for different speeds and park.
49a = turn signal feeder, black with white and green tracers
R = right turn signal from turn signal switch, black with green tracer
L = left turn signal from turn signal switch, black with white tracer
1 = Condenser discharge to coil, green
4 = secondary coil discharge to distributor cap

Most of these circuit numbers are embossed onto the device. There are several more, but those are the big ones.
