Hey everyone, just wanted to post here for others who might be considering options that I ended up deciding on using 1/4" Dynaliner (can buy from amazon). The below pictures used two of the 32"x54" boxes and there was enough left over to do some of the nose area also - the total material cost was right around $100.
Obviously the logo is not ideal but overall I think it looks clean. My bus had to have a full resto as it had been a bit hacked so my thought was putting in some salvaged tar paper wouldn't look right and this seemed like a good alternative from a looks and functionality perspective:

Anyone have close up pics of the OG material? I have an idea of how I could possibly reproduce the strips- but need a good pic of the fibers/grain? |

thanks Clara- I have an idea. Once I get materials together, and figure a couple things out, I'll try and get pics up. I think I can come damn close- |

Could anyone please provide the width of the OG tar strips?
I’m about to order some sheets of comparable material and cut it in strips.

Glad to know I'm not alone in wanting to get this detail right! Have searched for every potential analog to the original material and believe the old-style asphaltum/natural fiber concrete joint is the closest. Will shortly order some of this:

Although I was able to save a few pieces, most tore when trying to remove with a razor scraper. Anyway, I've got something to compare with the new stuff. My bus is fresh from paint and I really want something that looks correct... will post results ASAP.

a quick bump on this thread. Anyone know of any better tar insulation \ board to use for restoration that is faithful to the original? _________________ 1959 Type II Mango SO-23

Here’s what I used to replicate the tar paper strips for the rear luggage platform in my 64 deluxe. Bought two rolls of the traction/safety paper tape that’s used on stairs. It’s 6” wide and 20’ long. All my cuts were either 2 1/2” or 2 1/4”. It has an adhesive back and all for under $40! I know it’s not the purest original source, but it works for me. Hope this helps!

It looks good but they appear a lot thinner than the original tar boards.
Modern materials are often more efficient so maybe they are just as effective? |
I don’t have anything to compare it with since I never drove the bus as an original owner. Still need to buy the carpet to install and upholster the bus too. I know it’s not close to the original, but it was easy to install the price was right👍🏼 _________________ 64 Deluxe |

x2. Part of the reason for these is to make the area the carpet or rear board goes on flat/ level.
With carpet you can really see the corrugations if the tar strips or something else of the same thickness isn't there. |

Google Antidröhnstreifen
There must be something similar in the US. Those are used for noise dampening under windowsills... |

So the roofing materials were way too stiff... and realizing the OG material was probably a lot more flexible when it was installed way back when, decided to look into automotive insulation suppliers. I got this stuff from Sutherland Felt, correct thickness (4mm) cut to size and adhesive backed. Thought about spraying a light coat of rubberized undercoating on it to get as close to the feel of the original, but decided against it. A breeze to install, ordered in different widths as needed, just cut to length.
Total cost was about $160 (I over ordered)... not bad and results look and feel right, at least to me. _________________ Russ

Here's an OG piece and the new felt for comparison... I used a thicker material for the bulkhead.

I am at the point where I could really do with some original looking material here for my ‘55
Doesn’t feel right to use a modern alternative…
I think it would really let the bus down
Very htf original remnants…plus you need plenty of it
Anyone on the verge of reproducing it?
Know a very close match?
