A vaguely sad story hit the tabloids recently https://www.thesun.ie/news/5484746/devastated-driver-sea-kent-beach/ (and believe me, you do not want to get hit in the tabloids!) which brought to mind this old advertisement about how Beetles can float https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz7qxQcRYl4, At about :26, the actor peels away the door panel to demonstrate something, and I saw something, or more correctly the lack of something. See it?

From 2005:

In "The Getaway", after getting dumped from the garbage truck, the robber and his wife hide in half of a blue Beetle in the dump. Theres a mangled wreck of a lowlight Ghia and a white Beetle in the dump also. While fleeing the bank they almost hit a red bug head-on. Looks like I own this thread Wink Laughing

Here are some shots of the dump segment, with Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) and his wife Carol (Ali MacGraw) in the Beetle, as well as the Ghia in the background. My last 2 photos were digi camera shots taken off my traditional (cathode ray tube) TV many years ago; the others are from a digital TV.
-Large-radius cornered side window style and vinyl headliner should make it a '63 or '64 Beetle.
-Is the door striker style another clue as to the year?
-Does that right taillamp mounting area seem small for the '63-style? More like the '61?
-With the headliner appearing to be unusually clean, maybe it's a vinyl replacement for an original cloth headliner for a '61?
-Is that the top of the outer right rib of an H apron (thru '60 model year)?

The "red bug" on the town's side street is an orange '72 Super Beetle, driven by actor and accomplished race/offroad/street driver James Garner per the IMDB website for this movie. Doc and Carol are driving their 1963 Ford Galaxie getaway car here.

And just before they turn onto that side street, they are still in the town and pass a red '67 Beetle parked on the other side of the road:

In this short documentary of the BMW 2002 (linked below), a late '60's Fastback is getting passed on a winding uphill road by an '02 (@ 1:29). With its 85 hp vs the Fasty's 65 hp, this was an easy move.
