When my Squareback sells I'm going to be looking to buy a bus/van. The ultimate dream is a 50s 23-window but it doesn't look like I'm going to be winning the lottery any time soon. Instead I'm going for a kombi, camper sort of thing. It just seems there's so many names. I'm wondering if there is an actual name or names for what I'm looking for.

It needs to seat at least 6 and have a table, so I think that means jump seats. Those are really the main requirements. I don't care if it has a pop up or tin top. I'd prefer it to have an awning or roll out shade but not necessary. I don't need to sleep six as we'll always bring a tent as well. Stove, sink, fridge would be nice but not necessary.

I'm not set on a certain era or year, just pre-Eurovan. I know for Vanagons I'd be looking for a Carat or Weekender, is Wolfsburg edition another name for that style Vanagon?

As for buses before the Vanagon, that's where it seems like there's a lot of different names, Kombi, camper, Westfalia. I know what they mean in general but am wondering if there are specific names to look for when talking about the interior I described above?

Thanks for any help.

I'd search on camper and westy/westphalia/westfalia to catch all of those possible variations.

Pop-top is a common term used too

Seems like to best fit what you're looking for, a Vanagon Weekender with two jump seats would fill the bill best. That would seat 7. Some years of Bay Bus came with 5-seater campers.

The problem with your question is that there is so much variation simply in the terms that people use with these things, that it is nearly impossible to tell you exactly what to look for. Just with the fighting between "Is it a 'Bus' or a 'Van'?" is enough to see that there are zillions of variations. That even happens sometimes in the Vanagon group.

I would suggest just making a habit of looking through the classifieds sections of the types of Bus/Vans you are interested in and see what trips your trigger. [/b]

Also look in each forum for the type of vehicle you are looking at. you will find valuable info in the Sticky sections that may help you buy or not buy whichever vehicle you choose and also what to look for after you purchase it.

Weekender as mentioned- but see also "Multivan" for the ultimate Vanagon combo.
