Toyo has recently put out a new Open Country AT3 tire. Thinking about trying a set for my 86 Syncro.

After reading Outwesty's Zincro Build threat where he gives the Open Country AT2s high marks, was set on getting those, but like the more aggressive look of the 3s.

If anyone has them, would like to hear what you think. I'm planning on the 225/70/16 size.

Thanks!

Appears to be a nice new tire and would love to hear how it compares to a BFG KO AT. Available in a lot of sizes too.

Isn't a SL rated tire too light for use on a Vanagon though? I've seen folks running the Toyo AT2's also recently.

I'm clearly not an expert, but the load rating for each tire is close to 1900+lbs. x 4 would be well above whatever my van weight is, which i'm guessing is between 5 and 6k lbs.

This tire is about 15lbs lighter and about $100 bucks cheaper than a BFG TAKO2s. The weight's probably not a huge deal having the SVX motor, but maybe a little less wear on the tranny and maybe better mpg's?

I've had BFG's on all of my 2wd vans and now on my Syncro. Curious to try something new.

Load rating on that size is 103T, far above the minimum.. Good rating for even a overloaded Westy.

Oh nice find. And made in my size (215/85R16). I went with the new Falken Wildpeaks which are great so far, but when those wear down....

Dangit, I just put some 16in AT2s on my syncro. I had 15in nokian WRC tires the AT2s are much more comfortable.

Will add this then to my list. The Falken Wildpeak A/T Trails were the ones going on, but I have time still and maybe these are an option as well...

The OP's link shows 7 15" tires.

They're all relatively big tires for a Vanagon, the smallest is P215/75R15.

New Toyo Open Country AT3s (225/70/16) are on. I've only driven a few miles so far, but I like the look and they felt solid and were fairly quiet on the road. They do have a ton of little 'hairs" on them. I'll either get used to that and leave them, or spend some time and take them off.

Oh no, leave them. They designed to create airflow to break up the tire noise! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Yeah, I’m surprised how tall a tire some here choose to run with stock gearing... and I have a 1.8T and 5-spd.
I’m running 215/65-16— 27.0” tall, maybe a bit taller wouldn’t be too bad with my powertrain, but I don’t really have a need for taller tires.

I just went for a first drive on my new Toyo AT3's.

Gotta say I like them. Mine are 225/70/16, just like the OP's. Mine are mounted on 16x8 Italia AT rims ET 35 with enlarged centers.

Impressions: Smoother and not so harsh as the 10 year old BFG KO's that came off. Those were 215/70/16 mounted on Mercedes CLK rims. Seem to track better going down the road. The Toyos are slightly bigger, but I don't notice around town with the torquey TDI in my Syncro. I might feel it climbing hills, but we shall see.

Seems like a good tire for the money so far.

These fit pretty nice on a non-lifted syncro.

Just bumbing this thread to see if anyone in a Non Syncro has tested these and has any additional thoughts on them. Looks like the General Grabbers are being discontinued, new Generals don't have a good size available for the ATx

Thinking about running 215/70/16 on some Merc rims I just got on my Westy (2WD). Anyone have issues with this size contacting at full flex while turning the front wheels?

Anything wider than 70 I'd expect to have some issues with.

I was lookin at Wildpeak A/T's but still can't make up my mind if I should go the K02 route. I mostly do USFS road driving and highways, so I lean towards the A/Ts for road noise and all-condition capability, but now these Toyo's are an interesting option.

I'm sure it was in error, but my OCD dictates that I correct you. No offence intended.

215 is the width in millimeters.
70 is the sidewall height ratio (70% of 215mm = 150mm)
16 is the rim size in inches Rolling Eyes the tire fits.

...and to add something to the thread, I am running 215/70/15 with no issue (1 inch smaller).
