85 Westy, 1.9 liter engine. Today I was replacing the boot between the air flow sensor and throttle body. When I removed the air filter box, I found a round "plug" with a cap on it, and it had a wiring harness attached to it. It also has a metal strap on it that looks like it would be held onto a bracket or perhaps the side walls of the engine compartment.

Is this some sort of diagnostic connector? I cannot seem to locate what it is in any of my books (HP book on Bosh Fuel injection, or the Bentley).

It's an rpm pickup for dealer diagnostics.

Thanks! Where did you find this info? I could not locate it, but maybe I overlooked something. Where does it mount? It does have a bracket attached to it, that looks like a small sheet metal screw would hold it against something.

Do you or anyone have a pic of it's original location?

Even the dealer doesn't use it anymore. You can remove it or not, it is up to you.

Naw, I'm an "originality" nut. I'll keep it there, even if it's useless.

Now to find out where it was connected up against.......meaning it has this bracket with a hole in it so it can connect against a bracket (?) or against the firewall (?)

One end mounts on the alt the other end (sensor) mounts in the case aimed at the flywheel. It is basically a hall effect sensor that pics up on two pins in the flywheel.

This reminds me. When I was rebuilding my engine it still had the sensor pole in the block. I had just bolted up the case halves and went to turn the motor and it turned some and stopped solid. I was tearing my hair out trying to decipher why, as I didn't want to disassemble the case again. Then I tilted the motor for some other reason, and it was able to turn all the way around. I realised that the sensor pole was loose in the case and had slid forward and was blocking the pin on the back of the flywheel. Since the sensor is useless and only serves to cover the big hole in the bellousing flange, I tore it out of there tout suite. So check if it's loose.

How are they removed? Is there a nut behind the flywheel?
It's in the way when you try to remove the intake. I was going to try to take it out the easy way, but I'll cut it off with a dremel if that's the easiest way.
