A very big rattle occurred after hitting some bumps. It seems to be coming from the top of the steering column. I removed the horn ring to view the whole shaft moving back and forth 1/4" when physically moved back and forth or up and down. The nut is tight on the shaft. Any ideas?

There is a bearing at the lower portion of the steering column. It can come loose. I also believe there is a circlip.

I suggest you take the entire column out and see what's up. While you are there, it may be a good idea to replace the ignition switch.

This.

The bearing is held in place by a plastic carrier that disintegrates over time. If the bearing has fallen out but is still on the steering shaft, push it back up into the column & wrap a zip tie or hose clamp around the shaft to keep the bearing from slipping back out.

There used to be (and may still be) a shop that made a metal collar just for this. I had one on my 80 Rabbit. I don't remember where I got it, I think I may have seen something about it when I used to be on the Vortex, but that was ages ago. (They crashed before my Rabbit was killed.)

No need to remove anything. Just reach down to the bottom of the column & feel where the shaft exits out the bottom of it, about 3"-4" down is a universal joint & the bearing, if still intact, will be resting on it. Just slide it back up into the column & wrap a Zip tie around the shaft to keep the bearing from sliding back out.
