Hello all, first post, first vehicle owned.
I just bought and got running an 82 rabbit diesel pickup.
It runs just fine, shifts beautifully, and handles just fine. But just a couple days after fixing practically everything on the pickup the brakes seem to have pressure problems.
I'll come to a stop, brakes feel responsive. But if my foot remains on the brake pedal it will eventually hit the floor and the brake pressure light will go on.
It goes away if I pump the brakes a couple of times. Brakes have already been bled, and I've just ordered new hoses, master cylinder, and rear cylinder. Hopefully this fixes the problem.
Edit: I should mention that I can't find any visible leaks.
Thoughts anyone? |

The car is 40 years old. Do yourself and others a favor. Replace/rebuild all the brake hydraulics. Hoses, master cylinder [which is probably the cause of your problem], calipers, and rear cylinders.
If anything, done right, you'll drive knowing you can stop. |

Yeah, cylinders were bought monday, front hoses had already been replaced. We bought what we thought were the correct hoses but it seems Napa ordered the hoses for the rabbit car, not the pickup.
Was more checking to see if there was some systemic problem with these, like something I wasn't seeing.
I'll post an update when the cylinders and rear hoses are replaced. |

Starting with the master cylinder. Brake pedal slowly or suddenly dropping to the floor, without fluid loss, is indicative of failed seals in the master cylinder. As stated below.

Most parts are on their way, hopefully by the end of this week I'll have a completely rebuilt brake system. Only problem part has been the brake booster, which seems nearly impossible to find for the diesel pickup.
I'm hoping that the guy I bought the glass from in Michigan will have a rebuilt booster.
I made this post with all those parts already purchased, was more concerned about some systemic problem these vehicles might have. |
