Anyone have a lead on 40H flywheel shims? I actually ordered a bunch from S&S Aircooled parts , they had them advertised as 40h shims but they were the same shims that go on cranks from 1500 to 1600. I called them and they said the ones I ordered were for late 40H. This is my first 40H rebuild I did not realize their was a difference between late and early 40, but what is really strange is that the ones I received are the same size as the ones for a later 1600 so it confuses me as to why they are even listed as 40H. But I am kind of stuck right now he says no one makes an early 40H shim, any ideas as what to do? Thanks

Try Bus Depot. They list them as 1200-1300 shims because the early 1300's were the same as 1200 40hp.

For USA 40HP models there WAS not a difference in flywheels shims between early and late. The only real breaking point was the November 1964 change to short stud heads, (nothing to do with the crank) and by Aug 1965, the 1200/40HP SAE engine was no longer sold in the USA. The change to different endplay shims lines up with the lengthened shoulder on the crankshaft for the O-ring flywheel and that happened around 9 months after the 1200 engine stopped being sold in the USA market.

As mentioned above, if you want early and late for USA models, look to the 1300 engine.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

I only had my hands in one 40 horse. It was probably almost 10 years ago and couldn't source any. I ended up ordering "good used" from flea bay. This has been discussed before. I'm surprised a good source isn't available.. maybe the vintage speed guys know where to get some?

I actually ordered a couple of those. but by my measurements I am going to need the larger shims. creideahm is actually helping me out with some shims. I mainly ordered them (they have the 30 and 24 at about the same price) to see if they are even the right size. LOL the shipping was 13 and the shims were 14. If they are the correct size I will probably order a few to keep on hand for the next time.

Well so I got the shims in from the busdepot. They are the same size as the ones from S&S which are to small to fit over the step in the crank. Luckily creideahm has hooked me up with an assortment of sizes so I can get the end play set.

That is also a problem for us in Germany, there is not one online shop that has the right shims for early 40hp listed.

The parts/service shop I used to work at in Fort Collins, CO, VRBA'S PARTS, I remember that we had some of those early/6V flywheel shims. I just called up Brian, the owner, and he says he's still got some of them and I mentioned why I was asking. You might try him. 970-484-2011

Hey Andy, Thanks for making that call. I was able to get the proper endplay set with the shims creideahm sent me. So I am good to go.

Glad you got it sorted out.

Brian said he still had what I recalled, mostly NEW shims, by the way!

No, Bughaus only has the later shims, not 40hp shims.

That's the point, no one is making 40hp shims anymore and they are hard to find.

The ones with the A suffix on the part number are the later shims, not 40hp.
