If there were +-300k Ghias made any stats on how many still exist?

I imagine that in a perfect world out of whatever is left out there every year some get restored others lost forever, meaning that every year that passes we have less Ghias in need of restoration. I'm sure there are still tons of them out there, but theoretically a long way down the road we could come to a day where junk yard or long forgotten barn ghias will cease to exist with only perfectly restored cars left. Now what kind of a world would that be?! Wink

So any data or guess on how many Ghias still exist today?

Actual production is over 500,000 when you count Coupes, Cabrios and RHD versions. Even assuming just 10% are left (restored, on the road or in storage/barns/fields - not crushed), I'd guess 50,000 worldwide. Probably 15-20 thousand are road-worthy.

I"ve got 2 right now but when I am finished only one will roll out onto the highways, the other? a pile of cut up scrap and spare parts.

I killed a 66 back in 75.

So, I've owned 4 total and have or will have killed two of them. I alone have wiped 50% of the Ghias that have crossed my path off the face of the earth!

I used transplants from a 62 and a 63 to save the life of my '66. That and a couple of stem cells grown to become a headlight bucket with surround. Surgery was only possible with willing donors and a belief in "Reinkarmantion" Laughing

I have only information about the registered Karmann Ghias in Germany.
Here is the last published report from the year 2008:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As you see, the numbers of cars are sinking permanently from year to year ... Crying or Very sad But therefore the prices are raising. Razz

If every country all over the world would have such kind of statistcs, we could add them all together ... Rolling Eyes

Interesting. I wonder if the 1:1 to 2:1 ratio of Ghias sacrificed to Ghias restored that seems to be showing up in this thread is observable everywhere. That would certainly draw down the number of Ghias that are left in a hurry.

Thanks for the info, interesting. I better get my Ghia before I get priced out!
Only 2600 in Germany, I guess it didnt sell that much there huh?

I can see a Hollywood movie now where some maniac goes around "killing" Ghias to raise the price of his collection! Shocked

Please note, that we had only 201 registered type 34 in the year 2008 in Germany - but we had 154 as a new world record on the event "50 years Karmann Ghia type 34" a few weeks ago Exclamation

I think this is a very good result. Rolling Eyes ... although some of them came from abroad. Wink

It's interesting to see how the numbers in Germany dropped.

In 1988 to 2007 for type 14 with a total af 4.452 en for the type 34 a total of 553.

I was wondering how the TUV in Germany has influence in this figure.
When was the German TUV introduced?

Can you help us Wolfgang?

greetings Gerard

Hello Gerard,

the German "TUEV" was founded in 1872 for testing the safety of steam boilers.

Cars have to be checked by "TUEV" in Germany since 1961.

Thanks Wolfgang !

In the Netherlands the APK (MOT / TUEV) was introduced in 1980 (only 30 years ago) In this year a lot of cars where crushed.

I have have owned approx 20 of these ghias. Two 62 verts and the rest coupes. I have restored and sold most of them. I am down to two 67's, and a 68 that I am currently restoring. I have cut up: two 74's, a 66 vert, a 70 coupe, a 67 coupe. I have crashed and destroyed a 67 and a 59. My friend had their barn fall on a 58. They are getting rarer. Look what happened to 356 prices. I had a 62 356 coupe that I sold for $ 3200 and thought I had scored. And then the 21 window rag top bus I bought for$250 and sold for $350. Times change but prices change faster.

That says 784 on the road in 2019 whilst there were 15000 Morris Minors here in the UK.

If I see a couple of Moggies in a month that will give you some sort of idea how rare it is to see a Karmann Ghia on the road. I don't think I've ever seen a Karmann Ghia I don't know, on the road.
