I'm still scared to do this one.
Some jobs just love to come out all wrong,
And this one one of them.
Nice write up, scrapers look great. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Here is a breakdown of the scraper assembly
line everything up so the curve on the back side of the rubber aligns with the frame.
mark the rivet holes with a sharpe so you can punch the holes
cut the bloody holes
the rivets are kinda interesting, the nipple has a crease in it that allows the nipple to bend over and compress creating a locked up rivet. kinda neat , never saw anything like this before
feed the rivet into the frame flat side facing what will be the outside of the door... get one of your retaining clips in place , then place the rubber and the steel backer. place the cap on the other end and crimp with pliers... presto! then follow it down the line till finished
easier and cheaper than buying a complete new set if your frames are in decent shape. |
Are these the new ISP west door scraper rubbers? If so, they look much better than using bus inners for outers.
Those rivets look a lot like Thing roof (soft top) rivets.
Very nice, and pretty slick. Thanks for the pics and how to. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

well i apologize for the crappy photos but... heat reflectant/padding is in, and we are now ready to start hanging the headliner.
material is called Reflectix. found at home depot , its meant as insulation and reflectant. found this stuff not only through recommendations on the samba, but on other hot rod forums, it is supposed to help significantly compared to felt. it glues in easy with 3m headliner spray adhesive . and really the time spent getting things cut and in was very easy, pair of scissors and a sharpie helps mock things up . i still have more than half the roll left .
to answer your question bob. yep these are the new type 3 scrapers they are fantastic and a great value considering you get the rivets with em.
Steve, with your abilities, this job would be a piece of cake. and your frames would probably be a hell of a lot nicer than mine .
anyway... so the headliner install begins... slowly , patiently i will stretch this all out perfect before gluing anything. got the contact cement... my only question is , are they bleeding serious about the 20 minute tack up time? _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

I just have to say.. headliner installation sucks balls..
The way understand it is with 2 metric tons of clips ... start at the c pillar and work your way forward... does anyone have any advice to make a fastback headliner install any easier? _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

Well, at least now you know why I cut the roof off a Square rather than put a headliner in it.
When I did the headliner in Sue's Fastback, I started from the front (I didn't know any better). When I did my Notch, I did the same thing on it too (both were cloth headliners, versus vinyl).
You might want to look thru Mark's (W1K1) thread on doing a Squareback headliner. If it doesn't do anything else, it might give you an idea of how to get it set up for install. Since you still have the glass out, it should be semi easier to set it up. Just leave some extra material around your cuts, then trim after the glue has dried. If you look at how VW did it, they wrapped the headliner material all the way around the window lip, with their cuts being hidden by the window seal. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

This might be a case of asking the forum in a separate posting, as it might help others, and make searching easier, since it seems to be a semi-common question (headliner how to). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

they are all the same, from the postage stamp size Ghia , to a bus, attach front and back , and a center section of the middle , then work evenly to the corners.
that ensures no sags or wrinkles, there are more pictures in my gallery

I took mine to an upholstery place that specialises in these kind of things, and when I went by a couple of days later to see how he was getting on, he got made at me and said it was the WORST install he had had for a long time !!
Bit like my door windows, really !!!
Have fun !!

Keep in mind this is not the current state of the headliner, this is just where I remembered to take pictures... corners are sorted out finally and the c pillars are looking much much better
once I commited and started snipping in the corners and curves it went much quicker. I'll snap some pictures tonight after I glue the door opening sections.
Steve , Headliner man... thank you for the detailed write up. I am only posting mine as proof its getting done. lol. your write up and pictures is really going to help on the sunroof panel. thanks again for your detailed documentation on these things. makes it easy for the rest of us. _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

Heyman, thanks for the props!
glad there's one guy who can use all of that garbage i posted all over the place...
Help a brother out here..
Hope you're not foolish like me.
There's a square hole up above the little finger plate the crank handle tucks up into.
What goes in that hole?
Something threaded into there, but all i have is a square hole.
Do you have anything in there?
I hope so.
If so, what?
I'm stuck on stupid until i can figure out what I'm missing,
And either find one or buy one.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

I have that square hole too, but I have a screw hole behind it (closer to driver) there was nothing I that hole when I pulled it apart, and that little cup wasn't there when I bought the car. the one I have is actually sourced from a bug. what I assumed was that on the type three piece there was a square shaped locater maybe?
but if yours doesn't have it , i don't know what that little square hole would have been used for? maybe earlier models utilized it? _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

Yup, my Notch sunroof was the same way (parts missing). I originally used new bug parts from CIP back when I did mine (late 98 early 99). I didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to it, since putting the cup piece up in place aligned with a hole for my screw to attach it to. Maybe IF I had all of the original parts like Steve did, I would have been more concerned, but since I didn't, I just made it work. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

when I got Donald he was missing the front half of the headliner and the sunroof mechanism was a disaster.. I had to find a cable and then tweak things around to get the lid to sit right... and then on top of that in the Palmdale Ca heat it would act like an oven.. it was lovely.
I really hope Isp west decides to have another batch of aluminum sunroof cable covers and guides made , I will make due with the plastic ones until then , but I would love to finish that bit off and have a flawless sunroof assembly.
more gluing last night, doing this in stages, but Ill be wrapping the a and b pillars tonight . I'll have pictures when this is all done, cant wait to have my Bay window friend come over and help me get the glass back in the car, that for me will be the biggest accomplishment ever, as I will be just mere steps away from driving _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!
