Late 60s-onwards the German produced Bugs seems to have come with a single line production plate (containing paint code, scheduled prod date, etc).
It's missing on my 71 super vert. And as far as I can recall, I haven't seen one on a 71 super/vert.
Perhaps mine was lost during the repaint 25 years ago. I was wondering if there are any 71 super owners who can confirm that they have the plate. Sedan or vert?
Or was it a one year thing -- since 71 was a first year. Or just a vert thing? _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

OK, I looked. My 1971 Super convertible has the metal plate, up front, below and to the left of the latch, faces forward, as one looks at it from the front.
There's also a sticker on the door jamb; I'll upload photos later. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Yes: I'm aware that my '71 convertible was originally clementine orange; I had it painted "1970 pastel white" in 1978 for $140.

Cusser, that is the chassis plate. The production plate would be above it where those two holes are. _________________ 1983 Vanagon Westfalia Air-cooled

Both ID plates visible on this '72 SB Sedan. Cusser's '71 appears to have at least one of the 2 holes for the small ID plate pertaining to this thread.

The plate is also on the standard type 1 and the type 3 also has the plate. Handy information on the day and week the car was built. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Then I guess I don't have that plate, and never did (bought the '71 in 1976). You can see the two holes in my photo; one looks painted over or partially stamped.

That’s my point - the 71verts don’t seem to have the plates. But, they have the holes for the plate as it was part of the stamping and sedans built at vws own factories had the plates.
2 have posted in the poll that they have - assuming one of them is u cusser? I’d like to see a pic of the other car (request to whoever answered)
The production plate started in aug 69 (for 70 model year). But my working theory so far is that verts built at Karmann did not implement this till 1972 model year (or perhaps a running change in late 71 model year).
Based on this theory, no 70 or 71 verts should have the plate. Let’s see if data supports that theory

I think I responded "yes" because I thought the lower plate was the one in question. So my response should be changed to a "NO", but that's beyond my knowledge base ! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I can see the two holes where mine should be... but isn't.

That's how mine looks as well. I now wonder if 70 verts had these plates or was it a 71 only gap? _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74
