My poles are in storage but I will pull them out and snap a few pics for comparison purposes. |

Could they possibly be dealer made? Possibly extra telescoping poles purchased and VWoA had the other 3 made to support the flap. Might explain why they are made differently than the other poles. Interested to see if they are made with metric or standard tubing. It does seem likely that Westfalia would have made them in the same 2 piece screwed together design as the other poles. _________________ WANTED:

as requested. Poles look very well made and uniform. Interestingly my tent came with 4 spear stake things (the ones with the nails welded on the top) Presumably the extra two are to hold up the tent poles configuration once you have it assembled. The two long ones go to the outside and the small pole connects the two. The long ones have a hole for the corresponding stake pole thing to connect to?

my pleasure- not sure what purpose those silver riveted holes on the poles serve but looks like they were put there with some purpose in.
Ironically as interesting as it is to have the front awning sit out horizontally from the side of the tent it basically makes for a swimming pool to fill up if it rains |

The galvanized set posted earlier has the same riveted holes near the ends. Maybe they were for tie-down stake lines? _________________ WANTED:

Can you measure the wall thickness of the material?
That tubing looks pretty thin, maybe they wanted the pole to be lighter weight? If the tubing is thinner maybe that's why they chose to do a slip fit? Maybe those big threaded ends didn't come in the right size to use them?
What keeps the poles from slipping apart?
The rivet eyes are confusing, maybe the tool they used to smash the ends needed a hole to hold it in place? That wouldn't explain in the one in the center. |

The tubing is quite thin. The shorter female middle section measures in at about 1mm thickness and the longer two male ends measure it at about 1.5mm.
The rivet hole things serve no functional purpose to keep the poles together, they are just a friction fit.
Compared to the other tent poles they are at least a mm thinner diameter and far less robust than the other regular poles which are built to withstand bear attacks strength it seems.
The tubing is probably lighter as it doesn't have to support the weight of the heavy canvas tent or the rest of the poles- just one flap.Compared to the engineering feat that the rest of the poles are these would be quite easy to fabricate as they have no complicated threaded inserts etc they just pressure fit together |

Looks to me like a pipe inside of a pipe... circumferential weld... grind. |
Damn, you're right! I looked a bit closer and you can see the welds. Easy to do. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

My '59 so23 has a set of these poles, absolutely original Westfalia manufacturer and finished in galv and they came with two extra extendable toilet room poles also finished in galv.
They also need extra steel galv V stakes and tie downs as well. |
