Question. It is common practice to seal case head studs to prevent them from leaking. Some case studs are open on the back side, and some are not. I have seen engines damaged when a thread sealant was used on a bolt or stud that had a closed back - when the air pressure built up enough to blow a piece of engine of case off behind the stud. This is especially true if there is oil or fluid in the pocket because it does not compress. Does anyone have thoughts on this subject they would like to share? I could tell when removing the studs off the old case that the smell of old engine oil was present when the studs were pulled. I don't know if that is oil that found its way in thru capillary action over 45 years, is parts wash from the times when the case was washed, again by capillary action, or seepage thru the case in that area - but with the removal of each stud there was a whiff of old engine oil. The studs were all sealed with thread sealant although that could have been some that got on them in assembly. Thoughts please. This may be the wrong forum for the question - if so, oops.

thought about it while having lunch. Probably best to put sealant on the ones that go thru and just a tiny bit on the last couple of threads (stud end) on the ones that don't. Lightly oil the ones that don't go thru also, but not enough to puddle. Then screw them in slowly not to build a lot of pressure. Sounds petty but I remember a guy who brought us a block were the whole corner was blown off by a bolt he hydraulic-ed. We had it welded, and surfaced it, but really he should have replaced the block, and we told him that.

Only a couple of times have I had any seeping a long time back . Ever since then I apply a small touch of sealant to the last 3-4 threads as I am screwimg them in.

It still makes them easy to remove, no oil seepage.....and mainly there as potential vacuum blockage. Ray
