There has been considerable chat about wiring and turn signals, but nothing I have read seems to answer one of my questions.
I have this week finally got my wiring sorted out to a point where everything now seems to be working, but one issue puzzles me.
My 4 way emergency flashers work fine, and when working, both the little tell tale green arrow lights on the fuel gauge unit flash at the same time, which is to be expected. However, with the emergency flashers off, when I turn on the left or right turn signals, these work correctly, but both the tell tale green arrow lights also flash at the same time. Doesn't matter whether I turn on the left signal or the right, both tell tales arrows on the dash flash.
Is this normal ? Or should just the left or right tell tale arrow light up when the left or right turn signal is on ?
The auto electrician who helped me get sorted inspected the wiring on the back piece of the fuel gauge unit (which appears to be totally original), and said that in his opinion the lights are wired so that they will both flash at the same time.
No problem either way, but having never seen my car working before I stripped it, I just wondered whether this is "normal".
Thanks

Thanks. Will move on to the next thing !!
I noticed that some of my light bulbs (original ? If not, certainly old) seemed to have a mind of their own. The filaments were fine, but..... Then a mechanic friend said old bulbs often don't work as intended, even though they seem OK, so I changed to new ones and everything much better. Then yesterday I noticed my original switches (lights and flashers) seemed a bit "odd" - ie, didn't always work smoothly, so have ordered new ones. I have tried to keep "originals" wherever possible, if only to save money, but I am realising that a lot of this older electrical stuff really needs replacing to ensure long term efficiency.
The good news is that my wiper arms looked really rusty, and I had doubts about the motor, but I REALLY didn't want to have to take them all out to clean them up, so when I wired everything up and (after weeks of squirting lubricant on all the spindles) turned the switch, I didn't expect them to work well. But they were perfect !!! Even worked 2 speeds - Although the faster speed doesn't seem a lot faster than the slower speed !!
Seats and carpets in today !!!!

Keep in mine that the flasher is a 50 year old mechanical relay. Mine use to act up due to a broken spring inside. I replaced with another equally old relay and it worked a little better.
What year is yours again? Different setup/relays for each year. |

I put a new flasher relay in because I was having so much trouble initially I wanted to see if it made any difference. It is still in. I also replaced the headlight relay too because it was very corroded with water etc, and we didn't trust it. Mine is a 1970, but because it was Australian "built", it has parts from various years !!!
Once I have got everything running properly, I will put the old relays back in and see what happens. If they both work, then I have a spare.........
Just want to get the car running - Am starting to run out of puff - I'm too old for this caper !! Hopefully carbs will be here this week. Back seat is in, passenger side carpets are in, and once I can move the car about 2 feet over in my garage so I can open the door fully, I will put the passenger seat in.

I think your question about the turn signal bulbs has already been answered, but if you still end up scratching your head about other turn signal issues, I did a post recently that detailed my trials and tribulations with turn signal relays. It’s in the Type 3 FAQs now as a turn signal 101 post. I think your 1970 has the same wiring and relay configuration as my 1968, so it should be applicable.

Yes, I had seen and read your post, RedSquare, and found it useful at the time. But thanks for posting the link again so I can go through it again.
Appreciated.

I think I will be asking for a full hoist for my 75th birthday ! Its the getting up and down off the concrete floor hundreds of times each day that wears me out !! I dream of doing things at eye level !
And keep your eyes off my parts car - Too far away for you anyway

A hoist would be very nice indeed. |
