Hi -

I am trying to remove my muffler which is rusted through. The bolts to the cylinder head were immobile, so I soaked them in penetrating oil, heated them and tried again. They started to turn, but it looks to me like the bolt is coming out, rather than the nut off.

What is the best course of action? Is it safe to turn the bolt out completely? I assume so but would like a more experienced person's input. If so, when putting the bolt back in, what would the proper torque be?

Thanks in advance. All replies appreciated.

It's a stud, so if the nut is rusted to the stud, but the stud is turning... keep turning it untill the stud comes out.

The easiest solution is to just get new studs and nuts when you reinstall.

The studs are M8x38mm long.

When you put it back together use brass nuts to avoid it in the future.

You could instead turn the stud back in and use hammer and sharp chisel to split one side of the nut. Do not have to completely split the nut to get it to open up slightly.

Agreed, use copper or brass exhaust nuts and even then a good anti-seize on all threaded fasteners is a must,

When you get to the point you are threading down the new muffler in place, get all the fasteners screwed in some, but do not tighten anything down. Once every fastener is in place you can tighten those down. Doing it that way gives you a little wiggle room so you can get all the fasteners in the holes.
