I am trying to isolate a noise in the engine.
Should I be able to move the fan (an inch or so) without the alternator pulley or belt moving?
I have a serpentine belt on my 1915cc.
Thanks |

Either in or out or back and forth no on both accounts. Sometimes the fan comes apart at the hub from cracks. Often the washer is installed backwards and the pointed sides dig into the hub eventually making cracks. I’ve got a picture of that.
The result of washer being installed upside down points have dug into hub
It makes a difference flats up or down
If it tears all the way through fan will stop spinning and no more air flow. It makes a noise you’ll never forget.

Is it possible that the nut has backed off and needs to be tightened?
Further....can it be tightened with the engine in the car? |

Quite possible, but if that has happened the fan is toast, it's likely a little too late. Here's what happens when the noise starts:

Thank you all for the responses and the info.
I guess my next step is to remove the belt and start her up to make sure it's only the fan that is making noise. |

It wouldn’t be too hard to use a mirror and flashlight to peek back there.
Takes just a second to add a witness mark or torque stripe after final tightening. Now when you look it’s easy to tell. |
