Are they small? Like around a valve size small?

There were some valve seals for VW's made once upon a time. They don't really work in the boxer configuration, (or are needed) and they would brake up and fall apart.

There is an o ring that goes on the 2 studs that the rocker arm sits on. But they are black rubber, not plastic.

A picture would get you better answers. I don't think valve seals were ever used from the factory.

Plenty of info out there on valve stem seals. One of VW's ideas that didn't work. see# 5

VW did use stem seals at some point, though they called them "oil deflector rings".

I guess they did use them from the factory at some point then. Maybe someone can chime in with the years they were used.

Does yours look like the bottom image above?

Plus I've read that its a good thing to have some oil going into the valve guides because it lubricates them, so the oil seals would be bad for that. It is a startling thing to see those little olive slices in the oil strainer. Turns out is harmless. Modern cars have valve guide seals because of emissions, as they prevent oil from getting burned, but by now they are designed better and are not simply rubber olive slices bouncing around loose on the valve stem. Doing a little research, they show as being standard on all Type 1 style engines starting in January of 1964, engine number 8339393. The change coincided with when the rocker arms went from having a single oil drilling feeding only the rocker shaft, to dual drilling arms with the second drilling feeding oil to the adjuster screw and valve stem tip. Supposedly the oil consumption went up when they added this new drilling, so stem seals (deflectors) were added to cut down the amount of oil passing into the guides.

It's generally been accepted that the stem seals on our VWs don't work well, nor do they seem to last for very long either, so they're usually no longer fitted.
