You are really moving along on that bus. It’s looking great.

You’ll really appreciate that shiny clean engine bay when you reinstall your gas tank and engine. I did mine years back and it made the whole job much nicer. A clean engine and engine room makes those maintenance tasks easier and more pleasant too.

Looking forward to your updates. Cheers!

A big day for Henry, and Crusher too, as they swapped places today. Ryan has finished up the tin work in the back, laid a little smoothing compound on him, and dressed it out. Fresh brakes all around, and poptop off for refinish and new BD canvas. Finally pushed out of his garage and trailered over to take up Crushers space in my garage for engine install. Had to put him up in the air for a look and washdown first of course.

His motor has been on the rolling bench for 3 months now! I need it out of my way.

Hopefully sometime this week, we make engine noises.

I’ll ping you if I have to make that St Johnsbury Run, which I think is on your backdoor.

August in NH is about as good as it gets

Found this while putting Ryans motor back together. Clearly a P.O. job. What purpose would this serve? Its on the upside of the filter. Maybe let some extra air into the box? I would think VW engineered the intake horn to an appropriate size for fuel metering.

Had a few issues with Ryans fresh rebuild start up. First was bus related, not engine. This bus if you recall was a barn find, that clearly has sat for about 15 years. No idea of why it was parked. Starting to decipher clues as to why however. When we found this, the double relay was off and in pieces. Cover had been pried open. Also found the coil (+) feed wire that jumpers off the back up light fuse, and then goes to said relay 86c broken and hand twisted together.

The real clue was the ignition tumbler assy. While we could get the key to turn to on, and hear the double relay click, couldnt get it to crank starter. Key would twist to start position, but felt wrong. Took assy off and found this.

The housing is cracked from what we assume was someone prying on it, and the tumbler tip that engages the switch part is broken to a point. When key turned to start, the broken tip just rotated inside the white switch housing instead of turning it.

Here is the good tumbler we scavanged vs the old. Unfortunately, the key for the salvaged one wouldnt unlock. So, lower end of tumblers were dissasembled and swapped back to original tumbler assy and then assembled into the salvaged housing.

Put it all together and got a crank on the starter.

We are making a guess that when P.O. couldnt get it to start, they either tried to pry ignition tumbler out ( it was not drilled to expose the lock, I did that), and/or started trying to troubleshoot fuel pump and tore the double relay apart. Either way, we got it running for cam break-in.

Primed oil system with plugs and filter out. Filled filter and got oil light to go out within seconds of cranking. First positive outcome. Put all back together and lit it off. She fired within a crank or two, and static timing sounded good, 2nd positive outcome. so ran it right to @ 2000 rpm for about 20 mins, Ran smooth and strong, 3 rd positive outcome. And then....

oil drips, exhaust leaks, and trans puking gear oil out vent on top. WTF! I knew some shit would go wrong.

Oil leaks to be investigated. 1 pushrod tube seal on engine side- not a big deal. Oil filter leak- not a big deal as it got tightened down while running. Unfortunately it leaked enough and with all the air blowing around underneath, messed the entire area below oil cooler. Oil cooler seals were visable and dry and filter flange gasket was as well. Maybe a pushrod tube there as well, but too messy to tell. Worst oil leak appears to be oil pump area. Crank seal looks dry, so thats good. Gonna pull exhaust back off to see about leaks at coppers, and then drop mustache bar off to examine oil pump. I did use aviation gasket sealant on the pump gasket, but did NOT use sealing nuts. Hope its just a matter of gasket sealing nuts.

And for some reason, trans was puking oil through the vent. Checked the level and it was not overfilled. Run up was done in neutral with no cv shafts installed. As is with the bus in general, we have no idea of this trans history.

Oil was drained and filter will be cut open in the morning. Since we have to change some PR tube seals anyways, rockers will be pulled, tubes resealed, and gaps reset. A good cleaning of everything, reassemble pieces and another restart to dial in timing and watch for leaks as its running.

Good progress, and I think the sealing nuts in the oil pump are important

I saw and read all about the red plastic sealing ring type nuts, but honestly have never taken one of them off in the dozen or so engines ive stripped. Guess I thought they were an option.

It looks like his harbor freight hole saw was too dull to cut the fourth hole, after three ABS CUTS

Got Ryans bus on the road finally. He is so thrilled to run it, that we decided to leave the idle issue alone for now. It goes down the road great and he doesnt want to do anything that might put it out of service. Ok, its your ride boss!

Took a ride up north and joined about 25 friends for a kayak float down the Connecticut river and an overnite campout.

Yup, it left SLC 7/16, as of 8/14 it hasn’t made it to Paris, Maine. Knowing Fu**Ex, it’s probably in France...
